Also, Sharon, on the helping each other with homework:  my son had/has a study group.  He said that it has helped him a lot, even though I think he was doing the best of all in his group, because it helped him to learn things better by explaining things to those who needed some help.  You sure get the concepts down better when you have to explain them to someone else.

Sharon- Everything linda said is right. :) Everyone starts A school with 15-2s. They must complete 15 hours a week and at least 2 a nigh Monday-Friday. If they do well, their study hours will be decreased. They can eventually make it to vols which are generally 10-0s. 10 hours a week, none required at any one time.

Like Linda said, there are instructors to help them. There's a special term for it, but I can't think of right now. They can go one on one and get help with a certain concept or problem, and it will show that they took the extra effort to get help. That can make or break a student who is doing poorly and borderline of being kicked out.

School days generally run from 0630(or 0700) until 1600 (4pm). Some days they will have PT before/afterwards. They get an hour(ish) break for lunch everyday.

And, they do have "study halls" during the school day in which they are allowed to work on homework. In A school Aaron got the majority of his homework done during the day which was extremely nice when he was on Vols. :)

And yes, they do get homework pretty much everyday... Except the day before a test. Then they're required to go in and study. And they're forced to study because they have nothing else to do in the Rickover. :)

There are required study hours and all studying is done in the classroom -- nothing is allowed to be removed from the room.  There is always an instructor available to help and I think they can help each other.  My son said he helped someone with math.  Be sure that they are aware it is ok and fact they should, ask for help if they need it.  Mandatory study hours will be increased or decreased based on how well they are doing.

I have a question.......when they are in class all day, do they have homework every day and can they help each other with it or do they have to study and do things by themselves.  How long are the school days and how long do they make the guys stay and study each day? Do the instructors help them get through this program or are they just on their own?

My son is starting Power School tomorrow.  It's back to the daily grind.  I think he preferred T-Track with all it's weird hours.  At least he got some sleep.

NukeMom:  I wonder if my son will start power school with yours.  His A school grad date is 1/28, and he said he knew he wouldn't start power school right away.  Maybe.

Hello everyone - For all you new Nuke Moms who are curious about schedules - my son is now on T-Track due to start Power School in March (yeah, I know, it could change).  He is standing watch on the 1800 - 0600 shift, checking doors to make sure they're locked and that everything is not amiss.  Ugh.  I don't know how he'll stay awake.

I'm planning on collecting my sons W2s and then just doing them for him using turbo tax. Doesn't require a signature as long as you have his information from the previous years.
Comment by amanda on January 5, 2011 at 4:05pm
Man you moms think of everything! I know my sailor probably wouldn't think of taxes unless his SLPO or instructors mention it... or me :P
Comment by mn linda (nuke MM ELT Groton CT) on January 5, 2011 at 3:47pm
where do they go to get their taxes done?  I'm going to tell him today about it.  I've always done his taxes.
