Hi All, I'm just sitting here watching the weather channel. My son has set his alarm to get up at 0900 to begin packing to return today. He flies out of St Louis this afternoon. It feels easier to send him off to A School than boot camp because I have been able to talk to him more frequently since he's been at Goose Creek. I'm looking forward to visiting him in Charleston. We're probably going to drive his car out to him some time in the spring. I'm sure he's going to want his golf clubs:) I just have to wait to see what my work & grad school schedule looks like...

Happy New Year, all!  My son too is leaving today.  He just got home from a sleepover (um, not really!) at his buddy's and went to bed for an hour or so of sleep.  This afternoon is gonna be tough.

I was lucky enough to bring in the new year with Aaron by my side. I can't think of a better way to start 2011 than with a kiss from my sailor and best friend. I'm just really not looking forward to saying goodbye tomorrow... I've been on the brink of tears since Thursday night. On the bright side, I get to try my hand at giving him a haircut in the morning. :)

2011, I have big plans for you. Graduating high school. Getting engaged. Starting fresh at my dream college. Marrying my best friend. Letting loose, and being happy. Watch out, world, here I come! :)

Kathy - I told my son about your son and how he was a little lonely and bummed this week.  He said hang in there, go to the rec. room area and play video games and relax because it will get pretty busy.  You are right, after about the second week he will have a hard time calling for a little while.  They have to do a lot of hours of watch qualifying, on top of their classroom and study hours, plus their phones don't get such good reception in their rooms and if it's cold outside they don't want to go out and talk.  I talk to him on Facebook a lot.

Happy New Year a little bit early to everyone!  My son is settling in at GC and every day we talk to him he sounds a little bit better.  I miss him very much and nothing will change that. I am happy to hear his voice every day. I have a feeling that once classes start up he won't have as much time to chat with us.  I know he is doing the right thing.  I agree with Connie's mom. . . mom mode is always switched "on" even when we are not right next to our kids.  My mom is 85 and she still worries about us out here in California.  I miss being back east, but California is definitely growing on me.  I will always miss my sailor back on the east coast, but I know he is in good hands with the Navy and will learn and grow through this experience, whether it is good or something else.

Happy New Year's Eve and best wishes to all in the year to come!!

Diana - we are open about shipping the car.  He doesn't really need it right now so whenever is good.  We are debating whether to just drive it back there or to ship it.  Need to get details about shipping to see if that is more reasonable than driving it.

Oh Diana, just read your post.  Looks like my son is a day behind yours.  He is just leaving tonight at 11:45.

Just said goodbye to my son.  O.K. so there were a couple tears.  I didn't go to the Phx airport because my son gave me his lovely illness that he brought home and I am oh so sick right now.  At least he is feeling better.  He seems ready to get going and get back on base and into the routine.  Today he actually said that he enjoys Nuke school, for the most part.  That is great to hear.

Now we have to reclean his bedroom.  What a mess.

Happy New Year everyone.

Ya Connie, moms for life.

Diana, ALMOST looking forward to going back to work and reentering my life...did I really just say that??

Well, the airport farewell scene went better than I thought; I guess it IS getting a little easier to let my sailor go. That being said, I was sniffling and sobbing at random points all thru the day, which made my son laugh. Couldn't sleep at all last night, thinking about his departure this night, but I'll bet I'm dead to the world as soon as he arrives back in GC (which should be just before midnight, depending on how fast the cabbie drives from the airport). I told my son I would be switching off "mom mode" once he's safely on the base again. But my own mom says mom mode is always on standby, no matter how old your kids are: she's 77, I'm 54, he's 18.
