Back to the bugs discussion ... what's the best defense against the South Carolina chiggers or sand fleas or gnats or whatever is biting our sailors? My son said he and his roommate are being eaten alive.

Son PIR'd 1-14-11- his DIV didn't leave for their assigned schools until 1-19-11.  He had Friday until 8pm and we picked up son and 2 of his buddies whose parents couldnt attend. Picked them up again on Sat at 8am until 7:30 pm and again on Sunday.

Son didn't want to take his laptop until he knew where he was going to be and get settled. There are computers in the rec building that they can use until they get organized if need be.  They aren't the top of the line, but function.  Took several days before the had indoc and then a few more till he classed up.

Things he likes: room mate is great...getting packages of goodies from home also a plus, 2 best buds, and hearing stories about family.

Things he dislikes: suitemates, having to write anyone...for anything, when he makes stupid mistakes, the fact that getting 2 quarts of coffee in the morning means having to walk to chow, and when he doesn't get dinner...

Hang in there girls, these ladies here are the cream of the crop.  You wanna vent, they have the broadest shoulders, best advice and most humorous stories.  You wanna chip in information, they let you speak from your experience, show your photos, and again,, vent...

Welcome!

Jane- you probably won't find out for another 2 weeks when they actually start classes. Right now, technically their number is "indoc", or at least, that's what you'd write if you were trying to send them something via mail.

DramasboysMom and Emily-aaronsgirl11, thank you both! I like the idea of taking his sleeping bag. I plan to drive from TEXAS with a large assortment of things and let him pick and choose what he wants to keep.

jo1 - my son PIR'ed 3-11-11 we booked the hotel thur Sunday, my other son and husband left on Saturday, me and the son's Finacee left Sunday, we did that so we could go to the airport with him, it was a wonderful time, got to meet some of his Shipmates and hear more about Boot Camp, and got to take some photos of his buddies. It was great.  Not a lot of sleep as we had to be at the airport as soon after he was as possible.  He got there at 0100 and we got there at 0210 so about an hour later.  I enjoyed every moment, but was tired but wouldn't trade that time.

Bedding- SOn asked for us to send his sleeping bag.  Uses it ontop of sheets.  Then he doesn't have to wash sheets as often.  Apparently a lot do it that way.
Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on March 28, 2011 at 12:44pm

Quiltblue- Nope. You don't need to send sheets. They have bedding. I'm not even sure if they're allowed to use their own sheets. Some guys have extra blankets because the barracks can sometimes get a little chilly.

During Prototype he'll have to have his own apartment.. That's when he'll need sheets along with other housing items. :)

Daughter started A schol classes today, too! Hope it goes well.

Jo1, my daughter had until 8:00 p.m. on PIR day with my husband, then had to go back to base. They flew out the next morning. He met her at the airport to give her her cell phone and computer. She was in SC and free to meet me by 6 that night. (I drove there to bring her her stuff for the room).

I have looked many places and can't find the answer to this question.

* Do I need to send bedding/sheets to my son for A, Power or Prototype school?

Thanks in advance. He just completed BS21, and will PIR 4/1/11.

My son starts boot camp on April 5th and then will go to Goosecreek, SC after that.  Does anyone know how long the recruits can stay with their family after graduation?  I was wondering how many nights I need to book a hotel room for.  Thank you.
