I am confused will USAA only  do business with  the service member, or can parents also use it?

For example once my son opened a Navy Federal Credit Union account I could also open one myself.

catch up comments:

USAA is owned by military officers so they understand better what a military member needs. And their rates truly cannnot be beat.

Hands in pockets: No one in the military is allowed to put hands in pockets. That goes back to the same tradition that saluting and shaking hands comes from. If you offered your dominant hand than more than likely you could not be hiding a weapon. A salute show the hand and no weapon. Hands in pockets could be reaching for a weapon. My Training Instructor used to yell about what we were playing with when someone put their hands in the pocket--and we were women. How embarrassing for a guy!

dramaboysmom - I agree with Aaron's girl about mailing things.  Just be sure you have his class number before you mail it, which he should hopefully know today.

Just makes it easier getting to him.  When my son first got there he said don't send anything with just the indoc. as the class because his roommate told him his mom did that and his package was lost for a month.  I don't know, could happen even with the class number, but might as well use that number if you have it.

Emily- what do you mean 6 months of sponsorship? Never heard that phrase before...

Carols kitchen - thanks for the reminder to call USAA.  yes, I have contacted them to get a quote from them too.  I know that not everyone goes with them so just wanted to pass on the info about homeowners coverage for those who aren't using the USAA.

It does sound like USAA will offer a lot more of what he needs, and a lot more coverage in some ways so we'll have to see dollar for dollar what they will do.

Michimom - you described the Jersey Shore phenomena to a T.  I have to admit that I watch it too.  It's like a fascinating psychological study in human behavior.  So unbelievable and at times disgusting, but you can't take your eyes off of it.  Very weird how pop culture works.

Thank you ladies.  Those were my thoughts exactly.  Hubby wanted to UPS.....

I sent things in priority flat rate boxes (except for the laptop package - that didn't fit in any of the flat rate boxes).  I sent the laptop, cell phone, and misc that he wanted at first priority with insurance -- that ended up costing $60, but I was worried about something happening to the laptop.

Drama- Snail Mail has worked perfectly fine for me in the past. If you overnight it or anything, it really doesn't get there that much faster... It may get to the mailroom on base faster, but it could still take a few days for your son to get it.

Everytime I've sent Aaron a package, if I send it out on Monday, he gets it before the mail room closes on Friday. :) Sometimes it's even gotten there by Wednesday or Thursday! I just send priority... 3-5 days. :)

Japan is why I want to me married before he gets orders... If we're not married then he goes without me, we have to get married whenever he can come home, and it could take up to 6 months for me to command sponsorship. Otherwise I'll end up doing the long-distance thing for the next 5 years. :/

I wouldn't mind moving to Japan with him... If I had college done first!! Aaron just had bad timing on this whole Navy thing.. If he would have joined one year later (or I was one year older) then we could have gotten married and I could be living with him!!

The military is a great way to "see the world." I could see why single sailors would request overseas...

Ladies, quick question.  Son just got to GC on Wed eve, from GL.  We opted not to put "phone, laptop, etc, etc" in locker at airport cuz we knew he would have a few more things he wanted from home. ( I was right!)  Now the question is would it matter if I send UPS or snail mail? They would get there the same time I think.

Suggestions?
