Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

Comment by britefuture on July 29, 2015 at 7:38am

Got it! Thanks Mark. Yes, flogging would suck, lol.

Comment by Mark on July 29, 2015 at 12:16am

britefuture - it is strictly the number of spots available, though for E5, there is a related variable as well.  The number of available advancement spots is directly affected by the number of STAR reenlistments in the cycle.  Since advancement to E5 is part of the deal for reenlisting, as harsh as it sounds, each STAR reenlistee is one less spot available on the exam.  There's kind of a logic there, if you think about - at least they don't get flogged anymore :))

Hey Cali. and Mid-west families. Stay safe! I've been seeing a lot about the wild fires out there. That must be frightening!

Comment by britefuture on July 28, 2015 at 9:44pm

Okay so, not to beat a dead horse, but I have a question on the advancements. My son makes E5 next month. He said that the advancement rate above E5, on his ship, for MMN, is not very high. Is that because there aren't positions or does this go back to the, "many different variables", comment?

Or another note. I did get a "funny" message from him this morning. First one in a few days.

Me: Hi Bud, just dropping a line to say....(insert Mommy mushy stuff here)

Son: Hi Mom! (mushy kid stuff here, lol)

Me: It's been hot and humid here, you know typical summer weather for us.

Son: MA! With the heat index, it's 140 degrees here.

Yikes! I will never again complain about the heat. Well.....I'll try not to anyway.

I hope you are all well! ((((((N4M)))))))

My son passed and advanced E6 on his first try

Comment by Mark on July 28, 2015 at 2:32pm

You don't necessarily have to pass more than once to advance.  Some will advance on the first test they take.  In my day (Reagan admin), it wasn't too hard for MM nucs to advance.  I was fortunate in making E5 and E6 on the first attempt - though I probably benefited from the fact that non-nucs had to compete with nucs for the same advancement spots, and nucs are born test-takers compared to the Navy at large.  Sometime since, the process was changed so that nucs and non-nucs compete for different spots.

Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

It's turning out to be one of those weeks!

Our fridge stopped working - ugh!  Have everything in ice chests while trying to get it repaired.  Not fun :(  Good thing we have an ice machine at work so I can get unlimited ice!

Hey William, thanks a bunch for the clarifications. We'll get to know the "terminology" in time, I'm sure. J's/S's mom. Passed the E5 exam several times? Oh my, didn't know they had to pass it more than once to advance. Figured it would take time before it happened, but didn't know they would have to pass it more than once, while putting in their time requirement in rate.

Comment by William in Nashua on July 27, 2015 at 7:19pm

AParents EMN is just shorthand a nuclear-trained EM. The 5% quota means of all the electricians mates who were already an E4 and who passed the E5 exam & the other advancement requirements, 5% of them were advanced to E5.  Also of all the electricians mates who were already E5 that passed the E6 exam and the other requirements, 64% of them were advanced to E6.

Sorry I was a bit vague in my earlier post.
