Lynn, sorry to hear your son failed to complete the nuclear training program.   Does he know what he has been reassigned to yet?  Good luck to your son.

My son (former nuke officer on a sub) said the following regardless sailors who don't get thru the nuke program, "Not making it thru Nuke program may be a blessing in disguise - there are plenty of jobs that someone with a "nuke" brain can do. It's not failure in life - just not as able as others to cramp a huge amount of material into the little old brain. NOT A BIG DEAL - just go on to something else."

Parents and sailors are disappointed because "failure" implies so many negatives (often because of the bonuses and projected career earnings in or outside of the Navy). To some degree it's true, more doors might be opened with that on the resume. However, just as often, it's NOT true.

We go thru many ups and downs in life. Help them find something else that interest them. To moms/dads whose child is moving on, don't feel that you are no longer a part of the group.  Maybe the common rating is gone but the friendships are lastings.

BTW, of all my nieces and nephews - some w degrees from Ivy League & other upper crust universities - the one who has amassed the most money dropped out of ordinary college and started a business!  He is happy as can be, doing what he loves.

Comment by MamaCindy (MMW TM) on November 10, 2014 at 8:38pm

Hi Lynn!  MamaCindy here to encourage! You're welcome to message me. I'm curious what rate your son was and how far into the program he was. I'm assuming the new chain of command you're referring to is called DTP or Directorate of Transitional Personnel. It is right down the road from NNPTC so all the things he's gotten used to in the area will still be available. He can expect to be there 6 wks to 3 months.  Mine was there a full 3 months. Some go on somewhere else much sooner.  If he has already graduated A School, he will maintain the Petty Officer classification.  If he has not, it honestly gives him more options.  He may not have choices, per se, he may simply be assigned (that was the case with all the MMs that were re-rated with mine).  If they give some Nuke Drops (as they're often called in the rest of the Navy)a choice, I have not heard of it.  Someone else may know.  You have the perfect attitude - it IS a very tough program and it isn't for all who can score high enough on the pre-enlistment testing.  Mine was very disappointed, but moved on as a Torpedoman and is happy on his boat.  He probably would rather be in another rate that would give him better future career opportunities, but he's making the best of his current opportunity. I'm here if you need anything. Take care!

Popeyesmomma is absolutely right. All it means is that your sailor is better suited to something else. There is a whole lot of navy ahead for him doing something he likes much better. Sometimes I wonder why any of them go all the way. It seems insane. Hang in there, Lynn, he's in limbo now but will get a new job that will be much better for him.

Comment by B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet) on November 10, 2014 at 4:23pm

Lynn - I'm sorry to hear this and please tell your son not to look at this as a failure.  He's not completing the nuke program but he will find something else in the Navy that is a good fit for him.  Give him a big hug, continue to be supportive and remind him that it's not the end of the world.

There's a couple of people on this site that have been through this and have been very helpful.. Look for "MamaCindy" - she can answer many of your questions.  Also NDM & Mrs. NDM (although they haven't been around much as NDM has been sick).

We will continue to be here for you - Hang in there and keep us posted as to how things work out for your sailor.  Hugs to both of you.

I'm so sorry Lynn. I don't really respond much on here either. Same reason - I don't really feel like I belong.

Last year, a woman asked what would happen if her son failed out. The one woman had lots of answers. You might want to check it out. It's definitely NOT the end of the world and your son will be fine! Good luck to you both!
