Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by LoriK (Ship 02 Div 908) on January 2, 2013 at 8:05pm: My son said the area near the NEX with fast food restaurants, computers, etc. is called "Recruit Heaven" until after BST, then it's "Rookie Heaven". I asked him if it wasn't Ricky Heaven & he laughed.

I agree with Sean's stpmom: My son went to A School with no civilian clothes. He had a short A School anyway, so he just purchased a few items at the NEX to last him until he was done. I was ready to mail him clothes, but he wanted none. But most do that--mail them. Sometimes families take some civilian clothes to PIR for them to wear in the hotel room (not allowed outside of the room) after they shower, etc. You may want to bring a few more and if they decide to take a few with them to A School, you have to hand them off at the airport or after liberty if a GL A School student. But mailing in the flat rate box is a simple way to get some to them also.

Comment by tiggertime on January 2, 2013 at 5:12pm: My son is in Ship 12 Division 048. He is officially a sailor as of last Friday P.M. Boot camp was very trying for him. He ended up in the hospital after a week and a half at boot camp with a weird condition. At times his dad and I questioned whether or not he would make it. Reading everyone's posts helped a lot. He now heads off to South Carolina for A school. We are so excited to see him and plan on meeting him at the airport on Saturday so we can give him his phone, lap top etc...A HUGE thank you to everyone on this site for everything. It means so much to converse with others who are going through or have gone through the emotional roller coaster ride involved with making it through boot camp. I look forward to meeting some of you at Sarges meet and greet and also at PIR this Saturday. Everyone have a safe journey.

We almost made it through this journey together, and as we get closer to "the day" i'm felling a mixed of emotions. I don't know if i should laugh or cry. Is that normal? A special thanks to all the veteran's moms for all the helpfull information you gave. See you all soon and have a safe trip. Too bad i don't expect my phone call until i'm already there. Good luck to everyone on BS!

Comment by diannep on January 2, 2013 at 3:01pm: I would suggest that all remaining divisions have phones handy today for I'm a Sailor calls (908, 049-052)....just in case. I was only told that 908 was going last night, but schedules can change. You never know if a set of brother divisions went too. Calls could start in another hour or so.
