For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

When its time for them to buy a car or have current car on base/school, they should definatly compare their current insurance plan with USAA or with Geico Military. Again, Military life is so different then civilian, you want a bank/insurance company that can relate to the changes.

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on December 28, 2012 at 11:13pm: I recommend Navy Federal, my Sailors love their bank and it has some really great benefits they won't find at other banks. They signed me up for an account and i love it as well even though there isn't a branch anywhere near me. When someone writes me a check I can take a pic of it with my cell phone to deposit it without even leaving my house. I have a debit card that is also an ATM card and I can use it anywhere. I basically use the account as a savings account and and if my Sailors ever need anything or need to send me money to take care of something for them we can transfer to each others accounts.

Comment by Leisure-Ley on December 28, 2012 at 11:08pm: USAA is the best for insurance.... NFCU doesnt offer that. Im not familar with USAA for banking but it sounds like similar benefits. As long as the bank has military relations I beleive its in their best interest. My son does all his banking online on the ship through NFCU and he had a situation in Bahrain and was able to visit NFCU on base. Its the personal exprience ive seen over countless years with my ex and other friends.

Comment by NAVY-em's_Mom on December 28, 2012 at 10:56pm: USAA is different then NFCU? It sounds like other then the auto insurance the perks are pretty close. I know his bank has over 12,000 ATM's and it used to be when I was in, the NEX would cash a military members personal check with ID, even from a personal bank. The auto insurance part he may look into for the future. When I was on active duty, I was in stationed in Hawaii and used Bank of Hawaii (back in the 80's). When I was sent to C school in Great Lakes, I was able to use both the ATM and check cashing at that time from Bank of Hawaii.

Comment by Leisure-Ley on December 28, 2012 at 10:45pm: zaksmom-perks like with USAA, they are given a line of credit, charge card, low interest rates, free online, debit card/logo, etc. its military so they take care of them differently then a commercial bank. It works out great for my son who's deployed on a aircraft carrier.

I was in the Navy and didn't use it, because the lines were long at the NFCU on payday, for both teller and ATM. I'm curious at what he's missing?
