For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Luckily I was able to get some info and he was nice enough to say he would try and check back next week or I could call to see if he has additional info. I probably won't call and he may not either but it was just nice hearing him say he would follow up.

@diannep If we book on Southwest, will we have a chance to be with our sailors if they leave for an 'A' school out of state? I read somewhere that all the sailors fly out of O'Hare and we can get a gate pass to hang with them until they leave? Do you know if that's correct?

I am a teacher and another teacher friend had just stopped by after I received the letter. I mentioned to her that this was the neatest that I have ever seen my son write. To Texas dad....that would be something if our boys ran into each other. I hope you get your letter today too. It will make you feel so great and lift your spirits so much.

Comment by diannep on December 3, 2012 at 7:02pm: JLMom: Yes, I know what you mean...because my son's PIR date did change...He was asmoed (setback) when there back in 2009. I already had my flights...he had been at bootcamp about 3 weeks.

The best thing to do is see if you can book on Southwest Airlines. Do they fly from your airport? You can change with no change fee on Southwest (mine on AA was $150/per ticket...thankfully new flights were cheaper so it was like $89/per ticket). You can also ship 2 bags for free on Southwest. They fly into Chicago-Midway (about an hour or more from GL...longer in bad traffic)...and Milwaukee (about 45 minutes from GL).

However SRs can be setback in bootcamp at any time...even right before PIR. This can be due to illness, injury, discipline, academic, etc....so you may want to checking the ticket prices and get yours if they are good! Someone on another PIR group posted that if you check Southwest's rates on Tuesdays....they have deals then. Doesn't mean you have to fly on Tuesday....just book your tickets on a Tues.
