~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Lovely Navy Lady - do you know if any of the recruits will be leaving for A school on Friday after graduation? Or will they all have until Saturday morning? There has been mention that some may only have 2-3 hours with family on Friday before they fly out.

@Tnnavymom... I will send you a PM with what I know

I was unsure of which coin to get my SR for a gift and was able to find a GL coin and also a USS Arizona coin. I hope he enjoys them as I think he can carry it on ship or sub and look at them and think about who gave them to him and smile at this mom's sappy heart! Has anyone heard about DIV 074's progress or is it about the same for all of them?

Comment by diannep on January 8, 2013 at 2:08pm

Christine:  Yes, they can have their phones in A School.  If staying at GL for A School, they can take the phone back with them once returning from liberty.  If flying out, you need to meet them at the airport with the phone.  Or...mail it to them which is what I did when my son headed to A School.

Great story Craig!

Lovely Navy Lady,  You posted Div 075 & 076 are going through a big week this week with inspections and tests.  Any word on Div 911?

The more unique the coin, the better.

By this I mean,

You can have a U.S. coin...ok

You can have U.S. Navy coin...good

You can have RTC Great Lakes coin...great

You can have a specific boot camp ship coin...excellent

You can have a Commanding Officer (CO) RTC coin...outstanding!

The problem is, is you will not get a CO coin.  It doesn't happen...

Lets say after PIR you go into the Navy Exchange and buy the mementos of boot camp that your sailor wants.  You might buy a Navy Boot Camp water bottle, maybe a glass,  patch, or hat that has "Great Lakes Navy Boot Camp" on it, or maybe even a t-shirt.  But what item do you think will stand the test of time?  It will be the challenge coin that your sailor's grandson or granddaughter will hold up and say what is this? What does it mean?  How did you get it?  That is when the grandfather or grandmother (your sailor) will get a warm smile on their face and will proudly tell them about what it was like to be a sailor.

Most civilians just don't understand it.  But it's something to reflect on when you're a sailor.

Just my thoughts....

This is a good read...

Craig, thank you for such a wonder story.  I pray that my son finds himself in the Navy as well.  Did you give your son a coin from his ship at bootcamp or did you purchase a coin elsewhere?  If so, where do you purchase these coins?  I did purchase one for my son for his ship at bootcamp from pirgifts.com and it is lovely.  I just don't know if all coins must be earned or if we can purchase coin as a gift for example other than a bootcamp coin.

That was an amazing story Craig....Congratulations to your son for his wonderful achievements!

My husband has a collection of coins that he holds dear to his heart because they were from his dad who passed when he was younger. Im excited to give him a coin that he can add to his collection to remind him of his great commitment and new chapter in his life.

Yes, they can have cell phones in there rooms.  They cannot bring them to school.

Comment by Craig on January 8, 2013 at 11:38am

Christine - You cannot earn them in boot camp.  So the parents usually buy them.  Buying a coin is the only way to get one from boot camp.  The NEX sells various ones, but they don't have the boot camp specific coins, you can only buy those at www.pirgifts.com

To understand the coin, you really meaning of it from a military person, which the below video shows.

Let me use my son for an example.   When he was 18, he was lost, he had no focus for his future. What took me 18 years to try to teach him, the Navy did in 8 weeks, which I am thankful.  This same kid who stayed out till 3am partying, had many traffic tickets, would sass back to his mom, now is the top in his group.  He won Sailor of the year for base, and also receive a Joint Service Commendation Medal (the highest medal you can get if you're not in a war zone) for his work.   Anytime I can praise him, I do. It goes way further than some dang Letter of Appreciation. For things like coin, I know it hits especially hard in his heart because I know he loves coin collecting (like the US state quarters).

My praise to him is everlasting.  Being a guy, we guys don't show our emotions by hugs and kisses.  We show it by saying verbal things or by buying something.    Yes, I could buy a t-shirt, a water bottle, or anything.  However, those things don't last.  Heck a t-shirt will last 5 washing's and it is faded, torn, or obsolete.  I needed to give him something that would last forever (or until he lost it).  A coin is that item.  It is something he carries in his pocket and has carried for the past 5 years.  He has told me it reminds him that I am the cornerstone in his life, and that he built his life around me.  He knew that by me buying the coin, I went out of my way.   He respected that I took the time to think of him.  It wasn't one of those pop-into Best Buy things.  It was something that took thought, which guys never do.  If I can make such a impact on his life by buying a coin, so be it.  He earned it.
