~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

I hope everyone had a great day :) I was subbing for 3rd graders. They are a wonderful group of kids such a joy to be around. Walking into the school made me think of Sandy Hook Elementary. Something like that makes you look at everything differently than you ever have before :(
Just a little to add to the Train discussion:
If you are taking the train to Chicago then you would end up at Unuion Station. It does not stop directly in Great Lakes.
From Union Station it is a couple of blocks to Ogilve Station for the Metralink. The Metra is the train that stops directly acroos from Gate 8 on Ohio (The Gate you enter for PIR).
Here are some links with Maps:
Metra in relation to Union Station
Here is the Metra Page for the line you want to look up:
http://metrarail.com/content/metra/en/home/maps_schedules/metra_sys...
It's the Union Pacific / North Line (UP-N). It is the Dark Green line.
Here is the page with the Map of the lines...the Dark Green is the UP/N line:

Here is the page with the Map for the Stations Downtown. UP/N goes to the Ogilvie Station:

shannon: Yes, the Great Lakes train station is right there. Not sure about transfers and all in Chicago to get to the GL station. If you look into doing that, you could arrange to have Sarge pick you up and take you to the Navy Lodge. Taxis can get pretty expensive in GL....so you are better off using his service to get around.
OHare to GL is about 40 minutes in ordinary traffic (as opposed to rush hour). I would think it would be about the same to drive into Chicago...but if it is a nice day, you may want to take the train. The train station is right there by RTC.
Don't think they will know what airport they are flying out of yet...once they get their "orders", they will have their flight info. It will be either OHare or Midway though. Distance between the two airports is about 30 miles, I believe.
One other question.. Do they know where they are flying out of yet? I booked O'Hare from things i had read.. I sure hope that is where he will be leaving from...
diannep thank you for all the great information! Couple more questions!! how far is O'Hare airport to Spring hill Suites and how far from Spring Hill Suites to downtown Chicago?
*previous PIR group(s)....
knappi: Springhill is about 4-5 miles from RTC (10 minutes by shuttle for us). It is very close to Sarge's. Great reviews from previous PIR group on that hotel.
On renting a car or using Sarge...it is really up to you and what you think your new sailor will want to do after PIR. Some sailors just want to take a L O N G shower and rest in the room, catching up on laptops and cell phones. Others want to get out and do things....Gurnee Mall is nearby and lots go there. Some want to to into Chicago, but many take the train to do this (station is right by RTC). Train fares are very reasonable and military is 1/2 price, I believe.
Sarge can get you wherever you need to go if you don't want to be bothered by a car. But economically, renting a car is usually the cheapest way and gives you freedom to do what your sailor wants to on PIR Day.
Now-- if the weather will be nasty and you don't want to drive, using Sarge's service may be a good idea! He has special rates for Navy families and if you "share" his cab with others, it is much cheaper. I'm assuming that you will be going out to the airport on Sat to wait with your new sailor until flight time? Hopefully he is flying out of the same airport as you are.
kimmie: That is great, because sometimes flights can change. Springhill is a good hotel, near Sarge's MeetandGreet. Next to a Walmart shopping center with some restaurants. Good choice!
tchon: We can't post BattleStations dates on here, but can private message them. You are allowed to let people know you have a date, and they can message you for it. Can you click on the "x" in your post box and delete it?
Thanks!
To answer your question about days between BattleStations and PIR....some have about a week, others only a day or two. They go in numerical order, lowest numbered divisions first (800/900 divisions are more random). Since his division is 074, they will be some of the last to go.
We booked our flight and rented a car (more freedom). Also, we are staying at Springhill Suites. Is anyone else staying there? We are staying until Sunday. We figured even if he is leaving Saturday, we can go into Chicago and do some sightseeing. We live in South GA and I haven't been to Chicago in years.
