OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Just got a phone call from a 847 area code and could not hear anything. I know it was my son. He called my phone, my husband's phone and the home phone. :(

shannon:  It gets better, don't worry.  The beginning of bootcamp is pretty rough...he'll get through it!  By the time you received that letter, chances are that he was already doing better!  So hang in there!

Comment by knappi on December 19, 2012 at 2:37pm

I will remain on the group here as there is plenty of information no need to go elsewhere!!  Each day i can't wait to leave work and go home to see if there is a letter !! And especially with all the tragedy we are dealing with would love to get a sense he is doing ok..

shannon:  This group has been pretty quiet lately. Hoping that if they jumped over to FB, that they come back here soon!  :-)

I got my letter on a Friday.

yuo need to get a lifeproof case for your phone, they are waterproof, (can take it in the pool) dirt proof, ice and snow/freeze proof and meet military drop requirements. A must have when you are around water. Cheaper on Amazon than in the stores but Best Buy carries them. Ask Santa :) I got one for my hubby for Christmas, it was about $50 and he fishes a lot so I got him the life jacket for it too lol. Now it will float. I think the cost depends on what phone you have. That $50 was for the iPhone 4.

Wednesdays and Thursdays are the best letters days so hopefully the next two days will be great for this group :)

Someone on Facebook got a letter from her son today!!! She also lives about 45 miles from Great Lakes. Ship 12 DIV 072. They should be here arriving shortly!!!

tchon:  Put it in a ziploc and then in your rubber smock pocket.  OR....better yet....in the bra it goes!  You won't miss that vibration!  Many do this, by the way, so as not to miss THE CALL!  :-)
