~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

As far as Christmas, they will have a "Sunday" schedule and enjoy a Christmas meal on base.

Good Morning All!

kimmie: Flying into Milwaukee saves you traffic (Chicago's can be brutal) and car rental is cheaper too.  It is only about 5 minutes further to RTC than from OHare (on a GOOD day!).  The only factor to consider is that if your sailor is flying out to A School and you plan on visiting with your sailor at the airport (usually the day after PIR), you will need to allow for this since they will fly out of the Chicago airports.  We always recommend that you all try to stay until Sunday anyway...because flights can change.

For those with sailors staying in GL for A School, for sure stay until Sunday night (late) or Monday since your sailors should have daytime liberty with you through the weekend, not returning to base until 9 or 10 pm.

I have a couple of questions.  My son is on Ship 14 Div. 075 set to graduate Jan. 25th.  I noticed that we can save about $100 in airline tickets flying into Milwaukee.  Can anyone tell me the benefits one way or the other?  On past visits to Chicago, I have only flown into O'hare.  Also, what do our SR's do for Christmas?  I am new to the military (even though we live in a Navy town), and I just want to get an idea as to how he is going to spend Christmas and New Year.  Thanks everyone!  39 days!

Thanks Diannep :) I did get a little shopping done today. I ended up spending more on necessities like soaps and detergents etc than I did on gifts lol.

The "glad you are feeling better" was for Lala!  Sorry about that!

Comment by diannep on December 16, 2012 at 4:02pm

It is so very very tragic and sad, Lala.  The innocence....just can't wrap my thoughts around it....so horrible horrible....it will make many schools, if not all, re-think the security in their schools, of course....but how sad that open-door policies will have to go...replaced with lots of protection.....sad sad sad.

Ducky, down where we live, we have the same situations.  Sadly, we have had children killed at school, one very close to my house, middle school, a nunber of years ago, killed by another student in the bathroom....it was horrible....the child killed was beloved by all and never in trouble.  His death changed alot of what schools do now in our area.

Glad you are feeling better!

I am so sorry I have been MIA from this site and facebook for several days. I have been really sick and trying to do as little as possible so I could feel better before my Sailors come home for Christmas. I am feeling a little better now and I am going to do a little last minute shopping and then get back home and get busy working again :) i hope you all have a wonderful Sunday.

I will say that as a substitute teacher I have been thinking about all of this a lot. It worries me because as a substitute we are not in our county allowed to have keys to the classroom. We can keep the door closed and locked in most of the schools but it is a pain to get back in when you don't have a key. If you take the kids outside for recess yo can get back in the building. You can't put a rock in the door to prop it open because then someone could sneak into the building who could harm the children. At one school there is a new young principal and she wants the classroom doors left often and she is very present in the building and comes in and out of the classes on a daily basis. It is so hard to know what to do when you don't even have a key to lock or unlock a door. We have very strict background checks, fingerprints etc; even volunteers have background checks and fingerprints. The main door is always unlocked and there is no doorbell to let someone in. We do have armed SRO (School Resource Officers) in every school in our county. So I am glad of that. But it all still scares me. I have a feeling school boards all over America are going to be meeting and making changes because of this horrific tragedy. I know I will be asking lots of questions when I walk into each school the next time I sub in them.

As a teacher of 3 year olds with special needs.....I woke up this morning thinking about what I would do in the same situation....I have a plan now...but my school is in permanent security awareness due to the the neighborhood.  We periodically go into lockdown due to neighborhood activities.

Pictures of the children and their stories are heart wrenching.  Prayers for all of the families/friends/workers so personally involved with this horrible horrible tragedy.  May the Lord put His Hand on all of them and bring them some level of comfort and peace eventually.  I try to picture each and every one of these precious victims "playing" in heaven...whole again, together again....peaceful.  But for their families/friends left behind for now.....prayers prayers prayers!

Good Morning All.

Sorry I have not been on...and I am going to interrupt the "flow"...my apologies.

Really, had so much to say and at the same time...at a loss. Yesterday was terrible in the midst of all the "normality" of life.

Ordering last minute Christmas gifts, the TV got dropped on its move for a Christmas tree we will get later today, making food, taking our youngest to the movies at 10 PM and picking him up at 1...getting home at 2 and sitting up for a few hours coming down from the coffee I drank to stay awake.

All normal stuff...while a different scenario played itself out across the country from me and it was all I could think about while doing those things.

Earlier my 19 year old kissed his sobbing mother on the head and hugged me after I had read what happened in Connecticut. Words cannot express...evil cannot be made sense of...

You almost want to push it away because even for us that it didn't happen too...it is horrific...I cannot imagine for the families involved.

I have to tell myself that I cannot let it steal my Joy (it's capitalized for a reason)...I feel a bit guilty for saying it and yet I cling to that Hope...or there would be nothing left but despair.

I pray deeply for the families left behind in grief. "Mourn with those that mourn..." I pray for strength and courage as those teams carry on at the scene over the weekend.

This may make you a little sad but I keep thinking about it...probably because it was one of (and still is) my favorite childhood Christmas shows...it makes me sad and gives me Hope at the same time. I leave you with it and will be back later on to lend support for your BC days!
