~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

SECURITY CLEARANCE CALLS

There is the possibility of you receiving a phone call from your SR (Seaman Recruit) during the first one to two weeks after their arrival for Security Clearance info. I received mine one week after my son arrived at RTC. Had no idea it would come that fast. I'd only really been on the site for a week or two, so I had NOTHING ready! So... if your Recruit has a rating that requires security clearance information...800 Divisions, IT's, CTI's CTT's Nukes, AT's (the list goes on!), anyone that handles confidential info...have a list of references by the phone.

This is a short business call and is monitored. No time for chit chat...but once in a great while the person monitoring the call allows a few extra minutes.

The area code for GL is "847". My security clearance call, the caller ID said "US GOVERNMENT". We have also had "PAY PHONE" reported and then area codes for the surrounding areas...so answer all...and just get rid of those telemarketers!

Sorry I have been away!

Here is the How to count BC days I promised a while ago!

Boot Camp Days ~ How to Count them... Boot Camp is anywhere from 7.5 to 9 weeks (longer around Holiday time), actual weeks of time there.

This next part is all generic and based on an "ideal" scenario of 8 weeks.

"Week 1" is "P" Processing days...usually about 5 days could be longer.
"Weeks 2-7" are Training Weeks.
"Week 8" is the final week and PIR.
"Week 1" of P days are counted P1, P2, P3 etc. up to 5. After 5 I believe they then says "P" Hold.
"Weeks 2-7" - Days of Training (DOT) are counted W1D1...Week1 Day1...and so on on the Weeks up to 6 and the Days up to 5. W2D1 is Week2 Day1.
"Week 8" - Practice for PIR, getting ready to depart RTC and PIR.
Here is an exemplar based on a recruit whose W1D1 day starts on a Wednesday. (I'm not starting with P days since they can vary)
W - W1D1
Th - W1D2
F - W1D3
Saturday and Sunday do not count in the counting of "P" or DOT days.
M - W1D4
T - W1D5
W - W2D1
So, their Day 1 will always be on the same day... ...except if there is a Federal Holiday. Then, it would push forward a Day. So, the above SR has Day3 on Friday...let's say Monday is a Federal Holiday...it is treated like a Sunday. Now, Tuesday is their Day 4 instead of Monday...and you start counting from there again. Wednesday - Day5,  Thursday - Day1. Does your head hurt now?! Free Smiley Courtesy of www.millan.netLOL
When you write your recruit...ask them to write the actual date and the DOT next to it...

There is really no best airport to fly into, however:

OHare is the closest to GL...about 40 minutes to GL---however you may deal with the not-so-much-fun Chicago traffic depending on when you get there which could make the trip longer..There are tolls on the roads to GL.  Have lots of change with you, or if renting a car, it would be worthwhile to rent the IPASS from them...for a fee....but no worries about digging for toll money.

Midway is the furthest away,  About an hour with normal traffic, much longer in heavy traffic.

Milwaukee is about 45 minutes away, no traffic, car rental/plane fare usually cheaper.

Keep in mind that if your sailor is flying out for A School (probably the day after PIR), the sailors fly from OHare or Midway.  So, if you want to fly into Milwaukee, but want to visit at the airport with your new sailor before he/she departs, you would want to make your return flight either later Sat night or better yet, Sunday, so you have time to visit with them.  Otherwise, you may just want to fly into Chicago.

Southwest Airlines flies into Midway and Milwaukee.  They have no change fee in the event your SR is setback in training for any reason (changed PIR date then).  They also allow you to check 2 bags for free.  They run specials pretty often so be watching for them.

Cincin:  One more thing....Sarge will have info also on what to do with your sailors after PIR.  However, be sure to keep your plans "loose" and let your sailor determine what he/she may want to do.  Some just want to take a LONG shower in the hotel room...and relax on their laptops/cells (bring them!)...others want to take the train into Chicago....METRA station is right next to RTC and military get a reduced rate....weekend rate is like $7.  Some like to go over to Gurnee Mall in the area....you will see tons of sailors there...it is a sight to see!

Comment by diannep on December 9, 2012 at 3:46pm

Cincinn:  We N4Moms veterans always recommend SARGE's MeetandGreet.  The MeetandGreet info will be added on this page as you get closer to PIR.  There are actually 3 MeetandGreets...all held the night before PIR.  They all have food...the sailors are not there...just friends and family members of the sailors graduating the next day.

SARGE's is held at Sundance Saloon near Courtyard Inn, Springhill Suites, and Residence Inn - near Walmart shopping center.  All of the MeetandGreets are "kid friendly" so bring them.  Sarge is retired military in the area for over 30 yrs, and he provides transportation for the GL A School students there and their visiting families too.  He has tons of great info...area info and hints for PIR Day.  So....if at all possible, try to make his!  You will have a chance to RSVP for his later once the info is posted.  He likes to have an approximate count since he and his wife provide all of the food each week out of their own pocket...free to you all, but he does accept any donations!  He truly is a great guy.  We have never heard a bad word against him...only rave reviews!

Comment by diannep on December 9, 2012 at 3:40pm

Jasmine:  Yes, if you have the ability to rent a car, that is always better.  That way, you are free to do whatever your SR wants to after PIR.  Having said that, many are fine using Sarge's transportation services (airport and in GL) and the hotel shuttles.  So it is "doable" without a rental car.  Just gives you a bit more freedom with the car.

..oh, and welcome to the group, Kathy!  Glad you are here!  :-)

Comment by diannep on December 9, 2012 at 3:38pm

Kathy:  Like KerriH said, they do update the guest lists about a week before PIR.  But they do not mail another letter out to you.  The updated list is what will be used at the RTC gates.  So be sure to write him with exactly how you want him to list the name(s) on the list (like the ID).

@Kathy   I understand that your SR will send out an updated access letter about a week before PIR.  I would suggest to write your SR and make sure you tell him exactly how to fill out your name.  You want to make sure letter matches your ID.  I would assume you would be ok but I would not chance it.  Have him correct it on the final letter.
