OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on December 7, 2012 at 6:45pm: The Quarterdeck on Ship 14 on RTC has artifacts from the USS Arizona from Pearl Harbor on it. The recruits on that Ship pass by that.

Here is a bit of trivia from that post about the naming of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor.

"There were three (3) U.S. ships named "USS Arizona". Many think that the 1st and 2nd USS Arizona ships were named in honor of state of Arizona. They weren't, Why? Answer: The USS Arizona (BB-39) was indeed the third ship named “Arizona” BUT it is the first named after Arizona, the state. This is became Arizona was the last state in the continental U.S. to join the union in 1912, just one year before she was laid down in 1913. The other two ships were named for the Arizona Territory and they were a Civil War Side Wheel steamer and a post Civil War Steam Frigate. btw: No other ship will ever bear the name USS Arizona out of respect."

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on December 7, 2012 at 12:36pm: Hello everyone. I'm Betsy and another "veteran" Navy mom on here helping out. My youngest son graduated from BC in Dec. 2010 and is a CTT on the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, CVN 74, which is currently deployed.

If there are millions of questions running through your brain, this is the place to ask. Welcome!

I am a "vet" mom here on the website. My son PIR's was in April and he is now in GL for A School (ET). He is just about finished with school and should comp out right before stand down. He filled out his "dream sheet" last night for his next journey with the Navy, Europe and Japan seem so far away. Now waiting to hear if Liberty for Christmas has been approved.

My son got to GL for BC and was placed in a TG with a PIR date earlier than expected and ended up in a push division (BS was at training week 6 day 2). He had three wisdom teeth pulled, never got a fourth (SIQ for 2 days LLD for one), pneumonia (SIQ for three days LLD for 2), failed his swim test (no fat to float), and failed his first PFA (because of the pneumonia). He still passed everything by the time he need to, and graduated on the date expected.

Point of my story is, your SR can do this regardless of the hurdles they may encounter. You will worry (I did,it's our job), and probably cry sometimes. Keep encouraging them, it is as much of a roller coaster for you as it is for them. Ask every question because there are no dumb ones, share concerns, and most of all share the happy!!!

Fasten you seat belts the ride is just starting!!
