~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Ladies, don't be surprised if your post about N4M's on RTC FB is removed, but thank you for doing it! :-)
They don't allow links to "unofficial" Navy websites ( or endorsement of hotels services etc...) like ours to be posted. Their official website (not the FB one) DOES list us on their "Other links" page now though. They just did that within the last year. N4M's IS Navy sponsored and does have a site administrator, but it is the members that keep it running, new ones like many of you and older ones ( which will be you as well someday soon!) , who volunteer there time to stay on and help out.
Military life is definitely a different mindset, and we hope that we can help with the adjustment to that in the beginning. We all have had and are still having different experiences as our Sailors all do different things. Ex: I've got a reservist "land locked" Sailor as he is a Seabee...he'll probably never set foot on a Ship.
This site is made for you to "carry on" here if you wish. There are GROUPS on here for your recruits A school, rating and Ships when they go out into the fleet. Then there are also all the groups made for hobbies and special interest. There's a "place" for anyone if they feel led to stay on and help others...we all have our "niches" :-). We love being able to give back to somethung that helped, and still helps, support us.

PatsFan:  AMEN!  Glad that being a former sailor (thanks for your service!) allows you to know that motto well !  When were you in the Navy?

sposton:  It is so very had to have no contact with them...especially in this day of instant contact.  Try to go on the NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS theory.  And....be ready to do the HAPPY DANCE when that phone rings with a 847 area code...or there is a letter in the mailbox with VERY NEAT HANDWRITING, courtesy of your SR's NAVY PRINT ability!

Just remember...we suggest that you answer any phone calls from numbers you don't recognize during bootcamp.  Some have called from other Chicago area codes in the past...rare, but it happens.  So be sure to check it out!

Not terribly city specific but a prediction for the weather when you will be there.

Thank you very much of keeping me informed. I have never been away more than two weeks without seeing him or talking with him. This is very very hard for me.

diannep:  Thank you for the information.  I just find it perplexing as some recruiters seem to have that information extremely quick, while others have no information at all - and of course it would be my luck!  LOL!  My Son wouldn't send the letter to anyone else that much I do know, so hopefully, I will receive it this week.  It's just difficult not knowing what his Ship/Division is at this point, since it has been over 1 week now.  In any event, if there is one thing I learned while I was in the Navy, was to hurry up and wait . . . and I am waiting patiently!

Comment by diannep on December 13, 2012 at 1:51pm

This PIR group is at the same time of year we went up for my son's back in 2010.  I had the same weather/travel concerns.  I actually checked the weather for that time on the Farmers Almanac website....and guess what?  They were "right on" with their prediction several weeks before we traveled there.  We only had snow flurries....lots of snow on the ground though....but streets were clear.  They are very good in that area about keeping the streets cleared.

Just a reminder again for those booking travel arrangements.  There is always a possibility that your SR could be asmoed (setback) in training.  That would change the PIR date.  Soooo....if at all possible, try to book on Southwest (flies into Chicago-Midway and Milwaukee....Milwaukee a little closer to GL, no traffic, cheaper car rental) where they don't charge a change fee (and 2 bags check for free).  They can be asmoed at any point during bootcamp....for a variety of reasons.

Early hotel booking is safe as you can cancel up to the day before or day of arrival with no penalty.  Checkout Springhill Suites, Courtyard Inn, and Residence Inn....close to Sarge's MeetandGreet, with PIR shuttle service, 4-5 miles from base, Walmart and restaurants nearby.  Be sure to let them know that you are there for Navy graduation (special rate).  Also, check the online rate for the same hotel.  Some ladies have reported that they got a cheaper rate by booking online.  We used our AAA discount when staying at Residence back in 2010---the Grad discount rate sometimes will sell out.
