Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Just a little side note on that subject; When my son was in BC two years ago, my future son in law was currently in the Navy. He asked me how often I wrote to my son and I told him about 4 times per week. My daughter's bf told me that my son was so blessed to be receiving so many letters from me and other family members. Unfortunately for my future son in law, his own mother was angry at him about his decision to join the Navy a few years before that, and she never wrote to him while he was in BC. :( Can you believe it? Fortunately he said he got about 3 letters from his dad, but he was so sad when he told me that his mother wouldn't write to him. He also told me that he knew a lot of SR's who did not receive any mail at all. My daughter's bf knew first hand how important those letters were and he even made a point of writing to my son about 4 times while he was in BC. :) So, please take GA2thfairy's lead and ask your SR's to watch and see which SR's are not getting letters and please write to them. After talking with my daughter's bf, I realized how much it would have meant to him. I just wish that I had known him back then as I would have been writing to him regularly.

My prayers go out to each and every recruit so that they excel and pull together in these last weeks as they approach BS21, as well as to each and every family member to give us the strength that we need to get through the upcoming weeks, until we can see our Sailors at PIR! Have a great weekend everyone!!

I have asked my SR to let me know of others in his division that seem discouraged or are not getting letters. Great idea to just write one. Absolutely they need our support....our own children we give over the top, but honestly are they not all our children?

I wanted to tell you all that I have been receiving letters from my SR regularly now. They are always short & sweet (he never really was much of a writer...lol). I know I write him a lot of letters, but I've been trying to encourage other SR's that are with him also with letters. (I actually included one note to a SR who wasn't getting any mail in with a letter to my son.) Yesterday, I received a nice letter from a young man in my son's division thanking me for writing to him. He said he never expected to get any mail from anyone other than his family and it meant a lot to him that a mom wrote to him because his mother passed away last year. I would like to challenge YOU ladies to not only write to your SR's, but also to send a note of encouragement to someone in his/her division. If you don't know a specific name, then include a little note or card for your SR to give to someone. Those young people need to know that we care about them and want them all to do well. ~sheila

Comment by Rose HM A School on January 10, 2013 at 7:37pm: diannep - thanks for the info. His Week 3 started after the New Year so I'm guessing they are starting Week 4 right about now. Just trying to keep up! :) My SR has managed to avoid the sickness that has been going around but I'm so nervous that he's going to get sick heading in to week 4 and Battlestations.....I know I shouldn't stress about it but I'm just praying he stays healthy through the two hardest weeks of boot camp!!! UGH...trying not to worry but it's really hard! :(
