OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

@katsmom thanks for the update. I received a letter from my SR but he did not give as much information as yours. My son did say that their RDC's were better than most, that at night they would actually talk to them.

Don't worry about how they will pay for their pictures. When they arrive they are given a "recruit card" which has several hundred dollars on it. They pay for their uniforms, hair cuts (after the first one), etc with that card (yes they pay for everything).

If they have opened a NFCU account, they will receive that debit card while in BC. They can use the balance on their "recruit card", their NFCU debit card, or any combination of the two to pay for their pictures.

You can pay also pay for them after PIR (there is a building next to the NEX where you do that), and order more pictures at that time.

PS, I think that helping parents and SR's prepare for grad pictures, in terms of payment and how that is handled, should be part of the info  here, for the preparation in the 30 days prior to BC!! This is something I have worried about since before he left, LOL!!!

Comment by imomxfour x 3 Sailors on December 29, 2012 at 12:38am

I'm worried now about the graduation pictures after reading the previous comments about needing a check or cash to pay for them.

If our SR's set up a Navy banking account, do they get to order and receive checks and/or a debit card - and get it there at boot camp? So they have a way to pay for the grad picture packages?

I received a statement for his new bank account here at our home address a week or so ago...I just hope they send a debit card or something to them at BC!!

Please tell me they can order these pictures somehow - or if I need to send him a blank check of mine or something. And if I need to do that - how much are the picture packages - like the biggest package with a DVD of PIR for example?

Thank you for your help!!

FINALLY got my first letter (other than the form letter).  She sounds so busy but so upbeat.  She said they were on P-HOLD/P-DAYS for about 10 days, which was pretty awful.  Got better once they moved to their permanent ship.  She said she was about to write to me and complain about her RDCs, but after looking around she realized that hers were some of the best you can get.  She said they believe in the Intensive Training thing, but they don't overuse it.  Says a lot of the stuff they do has a logical explanation behind it, even if it seems fickle and dumb. She says she misses us terribly, but it's bearable.  Says she should be able to call this weekend, so all of us with SRs in 912 can be crossing our fingers.

She got hit on the top of the head with a rifle during drill practice, but said it didn't hurt nearly as much as biting off the tip of her tongue off when it happened!  She was on LLD for a day but then was able to go back to normal.

Thank you everyone for sharing info from your letters; it certainly helped my sanity since I had not heard from her when everyone else was getting letters.

diannep, thanks for the info.I will surely make a point at saying naval graduation when asking about transportation at the hotel. we are planning on renting a car,as we will be flying into Milwaukee, but thought it might be better to get a ride to the "PIR"

I loved the Navy Lodge.  It is clean and nice.  I like it because it's close, and is geared toward the Navy.  The only drawback is it doesn't have a Continental breakfast area, only paper bag breakfast.

The only other hotel I would consider is the Key Lime Cove but it is very pricey.....

mynavyson:  One perk of staying at Navy Lodge is that you get a guest pass for a smaller NEX that you can shop in without your sailor.  The other NEXs require your sailor to be with you.

Comment by diannep on December 28, 2012 at 11:41pm

jskmom:  Yes, most of the hotels use the PIR shuttle service which actually is a service of taxis that operate as shuttles on PIR Day.  They usually charge $3/pp each way.  SARGE also provides transportation to/from PIR.  We did the PIR shuttle service back in 2010 (didn't know about Sarge then) and it worked out great.  You can ask the hotel you book if they use the service.  Ramada has their own shuttle van which makes several trips back and forth.  It is free to guests.  Residence Inn, Springhill Suites, Courtyard Inn all use the PIR shuttle service.  I'm know others do to, but be sure to ask.  Make sure you don't ask if they have shuttle service (like their own vans) but rather do they use the graduation shuttle service on graduation day.

I should tell you all....rather than use the term PIR up there, use the term navy graduation.  Even your SRs may ask you what you mean by PIR!  Yes, it is Pass in Review, but they all refer to it as graduation.
