~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

I hear all different opinions about the coin. Is it okay if we give it to our "sailors". I heard otherwise. I did buy ribbons for my husband any myself to wear at the PIR and got a window decal my SR's sister, since she can't go. She is 8 1/2 months pregnant now.

@Marcia the coin looks awesome, I am definately going to order one. Thanks for sharing the information.

I am so happy.  I just received by beautiful boot camp coin for my sons graduation. It is so detailed and the picture doesn't do it justice.  I am so happy....  I got it at pirgifts.com and it was only $18.95.  They have all the ships.

herbgarden, My daughter also asked me to send her makeup, burt's bees lip balm, her contacts and her check book.  She wanted makeup and contacts for pictures and PIR and her check book to pay for the pictures.  She didn't sign up for Navy Federal and according to her she needs cash or a check to pay for pictures.  I sent it all out to her today in a padded envelope.  Sounds like our girls are doing well!

We just resereved our hotel, we are staying at the Days Inn.  We were torn between there and the Navy Lodge.  We called adn it sounded that the Days Inn was almost right outside the gate. Is anyone staying here?

Does anyone know who I can contact to make sure all of our banking information is set up correctly and when I can be expecting a check? My husbands ship date got moved up almost a month and it kind of screwed up everything financially!
Comment by herbgarden(Ship12Div085) on December 28, 2012 at 3:31pm

Wow, Betsy, how exciting for your son! I think a lot of SR's hope they get to do and see cool stuff like that. I know mine is hoping to travel overseas someday.

Comment by herbgarden(Ship12Div085) on December 28, 2012 at 3:27pm

Thanks Betsy and diannep! I feel better. She did ask for these things. I was going to send 10.00 but my husband said to send 20.00, so I did. I was surprised about her checkbook too. I know she was allowed some makeup, but she did not bring any! I told her she would want it for pics and PIR, but what does mom know, lol! Well, now she wants it! Thanks again ladies!

Comment by diannep on December 28, 2012 at 2:49pm

herbgarden:  If she asked you to mail it, it should be ok.  They are allowed makeup for piks/PIR.  She will just have to put it away until then.  Yes, she will have to open the box in front of the RDCs but hopefully all is ok.  They aren't allowed to have much cash up there...so I just wouldn't send more of that.  I had never heard of checkbooks being sent, but if she asked for it, she must know she can have it.

I wouldn't worry about it and hopefully she'll write when she receives it.

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on December 28, 2012 at 2:31pm

hergarden, They are allowed to have makeup.  The RDC may ask her to open it in front of them, but it shouldn't be a problem.  She will have to put it away until PIR day. They are also allowed to have their contact lenses, if they wear them, for PIR day.  We always suggest sending a small bottle of solution as well, if you do mail those.

Good afternoon, everyone!

I've been spending well needed time with the family this last week.  My youngest daughter is home from college for a few weeks (she attends Univ. of NM and we live in MD) so we have been shopping, visiting relatives and just catching up.   We also had our oldest daughter and our grandchildren here for a couple of days.  Next week my middle daughter will be in town from CO.  :)

My sailor (our youngest of our 5) spent his Christmas time in Dubai!  He is on the only aircraft carrier which is currently deployed.  He said that he has a blast, while there.  So far, since his deployment began in August, he has had port calls in  Malaysia, Thailand and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).  He has ridden two elephants and a camel, snorkeled in Thailand and been on a sunrise safari.  He said that the coolest thing was that he got to hold a falcon.  Although I missed him terribly, as this is his first Christmas away from home, I am so happy that his port calls have been very welcomed and a lot of fun for them.  These are just some of the cool things that your soon-to-be sailors will be doing once their boot camp and training are over.  Of course they obviously work very hard while on deployment, but it's so good to know that they are able to have some time to relax, enjoy themselves and make some once in a lifetime memories as well.    :)
