Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

I was busy working on orders today :) Thanks so much to all of you who answered the questions and sent them to my page and my website. And the Special Ops DIV or going into Seal training do order black ribbons with gold letters :)

Lita, I agree with you as well. It would be nice if they did broadcast PIR on a big screen in the visitors area so the extras could watch or maybe even do it through the PBS and put it on local TV so it could be seen from hotel rooms. We should get Sarge on this bandwagon and he could put it up on the big screen at the Sun Dance Saloon where the Meet and Greet is held. That would be awesome :)

We nominate YOU to represent all of the PIR families and see what you can do about this! :-) It is very sad that a ceremony so important has to restrict the guest number...but I will say...it could be quite chilly if held outside in the winter! BRR! I went to my son's in Feb the year he PIRed and was glad to be inside! They did have a PIR ceremony outside for a special milestone with the Navy, but it was in the summer.

C'sgirl: You don't have to have the Recruit Training Command on the address, but can if you like. Here is the link to the addresses from the RTC site:

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on December 19, 2012 at 6:34pm: Banners are not allowed at PIR. While it is a celebration it is a formal ceremony (Pass-in-Review). They also obstruct others view.

BUT, bring it with you for afterwards at the Hotel etc ;-)

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on December 19, 2012 at 6:33pm: The recruits do not receive anything specific like a Challenge coin or certificate from RTC. When they finish BST-21 they do exchange their RECRUIT ball caps for a NAVY one in a very moving ceremony (this is private). At PIR those that have entered (or "ranked up" in BC) the Navy as an E-2 or E-3 will have their sleeve rate marks on their uniform as well.

There are Challenge coins available for the Ships at RTC now though. There was not before...only a generic RTC one (not that it was not nice). Craig designed these and you can purchase them from PIRgifts on ebay. Go to his Profile page and you will see them in his Photos. There are different opinions about a "civilian" giving a servicemember a Challenge coin. This is a personal decision.

Comment by jillymom on December 19, 2012 at 6:14pm: Also, can we bring banners to congratulate our SR's? Buildasign.com offers a free banner for military families (you just pay shipping). We did that last year for our Airman; it was pretty cool. We just got the 2'X3'.
