N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

FINALLY got my form letter today confirming Ship 02, Div 912.  Address matches the address recruiter gave me, so I think I'm good to send letters and make reservations for PIR on 1 Feb.  A bonus was a short handwritten note from her -- she sounded like herself (basically, "this sucks as much as I expected, and I can't wait to be done").  I know it'll go faster than she thinks once they start into actual training days.

I was wondering the same thing Rose. Thanks FTLW for the insight. Just a sad sad time for the country.

Rose - Usually, the recruits do not get normal outside news...they need to stay focused. BUT, when there are disasters like this or severe weather, they are told and asked if they have family in the area involved so they can call home and check in on their family. I know during hurricane Sandy this happened and we did have one recruit call home yesterday who's family is in Connecticut...but not in the town affected.

@mynavyson, so happy to "meet" another parent with an SR in Ship 03, Div. 082. We are from California....and I'm sure my son is getting a rude awakening with the cold mid-west weather right now - but I'm certain that is probably the least of his worries!!! :)  Well, I pray that maybe that is one of the worst things he has to worry about but I'm sure that boot camp is ZERO on the fun scale.

@FTLW - I'm also still reeling from the horrific events from yesterday.  Hard to wrap my head around the fact that anyone could do such a thing.  So horrible and sad and sickening....my heart is truly broken for all of those families.  All we can do is pray for them.  I also wanted to ask you a question about this - when something like this happens and it's national news, do the SR's get any type of information about what is happening in the outside world?  I was just curious if they are kept informed about news, etc.....

Sorry I have not been on...and I am going to interrupt the "flow"...my apologies.

Really, had so much to say and at the same time...at a loss. Yesterday was terrible in the midst of all the "normality" of life.

Ordering last minute Christmas gifts, the TV got dropped on its move for a Christmas tree we will get later today, making food, taking our youngest to the movies at 10 PM and picking him up at 1...getting home at 2 and sitting up for a few hours coming down from the coffee I drank to stay awake.

All normal stuff...while a different scenario played itself out across the country from me and it was all I could think about while doing those things.

Earlier my 19 year old kissed his sobbing mother on the head and hugged me after I had read what happened in Connecticut. Words cannot express...evil cannot be made sense of...

You almost want to push it away because even for us that it didn't happen too...it is horrific...I cannot imagine for the families involved.

I have to tell myself that I cannot let it steal my Joy (it's capitalized for a reason)...I feel a bit guilty for saying it and yet I cling to that Hope...or there would be nothing left but despair.

I pray deeply for the families left behind in grief. "Mourn with those that mourn..." I pray for strength and courage as those teams carry on at the scene over the weekend.

This may make you a little sad but I keep thinking about it...probably because it was one of (and still is) my favorite childhood Christmas shows...it makes me sad and gives me Hope at the same time. I leave you with it and will be back later on to lend support for your BC days!

It's great to hear about everyone getting their letters....I'm still anxiously awaiting ours although I did get an address from my son's recruiter so I could start sending him letters. I was waiting at the mailbox for our mail carrier today...I just knew we would get it today!! She (the mail lady) was excited about Trent joining the navy when I told her what I was looking for and then was apologetic that there wasn't a letter. I've really been a little overwhelmed at the number of people we meet that, even though they don't know my son, are so proud of him for serving our country! :)

@Rose (Ship 03. Div 082) Our SR's  are in the same Div and Ship : ) We are from New Hampshire.

Comment by jskmom/Linda on December 15, 2012 at 6:06pm

jillymom, I can't believe you got the form letter today. I was hoping we would get ours today. Now I am worried as to why we have not gotten it yet. We live in Florida and I know you are in Hawaii. We also want to book our flights and hotel. Our boys are in the same division. PIR is 02/01/13, right?

Comment by herbgarden(Ship12Div085) on December 15, 2012 at 6:03pm
