Good Morning diannep and Dear Group :-)
Yeaaahhhh...I woke up and could not go back to sleep :-(...so I thought I would make good use of myself. LOL.
I'll TRY to take a nap later after my walk and lunch with my dear sweet neighbor.
So, basically if a Recruit has a disruption in training they are supposed to be granted a call home (scripted usually, like RTRbecca said) to let someone know that they are no longer on schedule to graduate on the original PIR date. The Recruit chooses whom to call. When their status changes , meaning they are now going to graduate they usually wont call home again until that happens.
This is pretty much the "norm" when it is a setback (ASMO - Assignment Memorandum is the official term) for academics or failed tests.Injury or illness has some variations to it. This is due to the extent of the injury or illness.
Some have minor injuries and can sometimes just be on LLD - Limited Light Duty, don't have a disruption and are SIQ.
Anything that cannot be handled with LLD, then the Recruit goes to the RCU - Recruit Convalescence Unit or Recruit Care Unit. It is on Ship 04 / Division 2341. They call home, give the scripted call and start treatment. It is possible that they may go back to their old Division/another Division within their original TG if they heal faster than was expected (heir are parameters). They can do their academics just not PT and make that up. They are declared FFD - Fit for Full Duty and now you still have the original PIR date. Messy, I know...
BUT, if they require a long enough convalescence that is just not going to work with their original PIR date they stay in RCU to recover. Their PIR date is on hold until they are declared FFD. Sometimes they are recycled back into another Division in a TG and have a new PIR date. Sometimes they opt out (or it is decided for them) to finish BC in RCU (once they are FFD) in which case they will not have a PIR. :-( BUT, They will complete all of their requirements and Battlestations (they just add them to the next possible when they are ready to go), become Sailors and then they go off to their A school. I know that is disappointing as far as seeing them march or them getting to march at PIR but the goal is for them to be healthy and become Sailors.
Much of what happens depends on the extent of the injury or illness.
The short scripted call is what it is unfortunately but they are now getting them moved to RCU and while that may sound easy enough, there is all the "red tape" paperwork actual move etc. So time is of the essence. While they are in RCU they may be granted calls home. Usually on Sundays, from what I can find. BUT, I am hoping that they are allowed another call no matter the day to speak with someone home a little longer to alleviate some anxiety. :-)
We do have a GROUP on here for RCU. Here is the link:
The activity is low right now but don't let that stop you, ask for help. There is also info in the Discussion Forum.
Here is an article on the Special Programs that RTC has for Recruits to help ease the transition into the Navy if needed. There is a short blurb about RCU about half way down.
By the way, shin splints DO heal....very common in Bootcamp. So hoping it is just something like that!
RTRbecca: The fact that he said he will not be graduating, that leads me to believe that he is in RCU and his injury is severe enough that they know he won't be well enough to continue training right now. Maybe shin splints? At least he is still be held there and not being discharged. I know you are scared and full of questions right now, but hopefully he can write you or make another longer call soon and explain.
He would be in Training Week 5 this week....and they only have 6. So he was getting ready for final tests, etc.
I would not cancel any reservations yet....I would wait a little while to see. No harm in cancelling the hotel last minute if you booked directly with them.
I'm sorry this is happening, but hopefully, he will heal and be graduating one day! That is what is important!
Good Morning All !
FTLW, you are up early!
Here are the official statements about Interruptions in Training. The bold highlights are mine.
From your Family Guide put out by RTC:
INTERRUPTIONS IN TRAINING
Once a division’s graduation date has been set it will not change. An individual Recruit’s graduation is dependent on successful completion of the training requirements. Should your Recruit experience a disruption in training due to an academic or physical test failure, injury or illness, they will receive the opportunity to call the person of their choice to advise her/him of their situation.
If you have received a call from your Recruit stating their training has been interrupted due to a medical issue, physical training or academic testing failure you should NOT attend graduation unless you have received an additional phone call from your Recruit stating they have met the requirements and will be graduating. A Recruit who has not completed their physical fitness assessment, swim qualification, academic tests, or is ill or injured is still in training; therefore, they are not authorized visits.
From RTC Website:
A recruit who is in RCU or FIT is still in training, therefore are not authorized visits. If you received a phone call from your recruit stating they have transferred to RCU/FIT, please note you will not receive another phone call from your recruit until they complete their training requirements. Recruits are only granted phone calls when they have a change in status, meaning they are going to graduate. You should not attend PIR if you have not received a phone call from your recruit stating they have met the requirements and will be graduating.
RTRbecca - I'm so sorry. That's a hard and confusing call to receive. ((((HUGS)))) to you.
Did he say he was going to RCU?.
I hope his injury was not serious.
Please ask your questions. Or if you do not wish to do it publicly Friend me and we can do it privately. If I do not have the answer I will look for it or recommend another veteran Mom to help.
I will post some general info about how setbacks in training are handled as I know that when this happens everyone has questions.
You're welcome, Eagle & momma02~~
Yep, this scripture from the Holy Bible was so perfect for Battlestations that I share it with every PIR group!!
