Arwen...what about the earlier divisions as far as liberty? The reason I ask is that my sons TG had PIR on a Thursday, Memorial Day Weekend. He was supposed to keave Friday but got extended to Sunday (I had originally booked my hotel through until Tuesday). He was in the second division of his TG and said some did leave Friday. Is it the later divisions that would get the four days of liberty or do you think all of them will? TY.

The hardest part of the "weeding out" diannep described is being the parent of those being "weeded." Sometimes the recruits who simply don't make it are the ones you might expect should succeed. Boot camp puts stresses on people that they've never had to deal with before, and reveals cracks in physical and mental health that no one, especially parents, ever expected to see in that individual. It can be really hard to get that call, to be the one whose recruit is coming home early.

I got that call - albeit 18 months later. My older son was doing well, when he made a stupid mistake. He responded physically to a bully who had been harassing him. He won the fight and lost his career.

To the parents here who may experience this heartbreak, don't just go away. There are support groups that will help you through the painful process, especially Ship 5 Moms.

Monday, Feb. 20 is President's Day/Washington's Birthday - a federal holiday. In past years this means recruits will have FOUR days of liberty, Friday through Monday.

So if you haven't done it already, make plans to stay through Tuesday morning.

Yep, I agree with Lala.  UPs and DOWNS of bootcamp.  They pull it all together (most of them) by the end.  Too many different backgrounds, life experiences, goals, etc in one group. Takes a while to get on the "same page."  They are threatened with alot of negative in the beginning of bootcamp...and so they get fearful when all aren't functioning well.  But eventually they do some "weeding out" and the others finally come around.  The RDCs do an amazing job with these SRs!

Good morning all!  Have a wonderful day!

There really are good days and bad days and as they get closer to PIR the good days will be more and more common. It takes them some time to really start to come together as a group but they will get there and they will amaze you :-)

Gypy, Astrid, Connie- so glad you got letters.  It sure does make everything better.  So awesome.

Comment by Okie Cowgirl on January 6, 2012 at 11:19pm

Mail AND a phone call.  I think I like the mail better.  I can't really hear how hard it is in the mail, and it turns out she is editing out the really tough stuff.  She doesn't write if it has been a really rotten day or if she is in a bad mood- that way she doesn't worry me.  Still, she is doing well- she just worries about the others in her group.  Made me so happy and yet so sad.
