Ok, FTLW. Changed your pic icon again...I just can't keep up with your oh-too-cute pics! :-) Safe to say that you are a CharlieBrown/Peanuts fan?? HA! Thanks for posting all of this info for the ladies!
For any New members (Welcome to all!) and just a reminder...this will be posted for the first few weeks of Boot Camp.
Community Guidelines and OPSEC
Hello Everyone.
Safety for your SR (future Sailor) and you!
Sailors LAST names are NOT allowed anywhere on this site. If your last name is different from your sailors it is still not recommended.
FIRST names ARE allowed but I, and some of the other “veteran” moms, will most often advise you not to use them. This is a public forum and anyone can read the posts-they do not have to be a member (if the group is set to private, the public cannot read but all N4M members can-so all you have to do is join) While they use their last names in BC (in fact they don't usually, if ever, find out each other’s first names until the end of BC), the RDC's know who they are and can then, with the right amount of info, link them up to you. So, let’s say you use your last name in your N4M name, post a picture of your SR...easy to match up...and so on.
Why does that matter? Your SR's are trying to get through BC with as little undue attention as possible. "Fly under the radar", so to speak. There have been reports from moms of their recruits being matched up with them. Some are just identified…some get IT (Intensive Training), I am guessing this depends on WHAT is posted…I know of one mom who said that her son had to do 5 push-ups just for every time she posted!
The MOST important reason for being discreet is OPSEC-Operational Security. This is a way of life for us now. It will be for your Sailors career and for some of them, even more so, depending on their individual security clearance. Some moms have mentioned that even today after years they do not know EXACTLY what their sailor does.
SPECOPS...definitely need to be VERY careful.

For those with there on ID Here is the Navy Gateway Inn:

This is the Site for Naval Station Great Lakes with info on the Gateway Inn...just thought I would post if you want to "explore" information about Naval Station Great lakes and see hjust how big it is...it says it is "like a city"...and it is!
http://cnic.navy.mil/GreatLakes/FleetAndFamilyReadiness/HousingAndL...
P.S. I will probably condense everything into a discussion! LOL
I stayed at the Navy Lodge. It is clean and comfortable....they do have SOME rooms with kitchenettes (stove top but no oven)...first come, first serve. I had two queen beds with a rollaway, microwave with a small fridge. There is a laundry (Used it!) coffee 24/7, vending machines, computer with a printer on each floor (for a fee - these look just like the ones at RTC for the recruits!). They can give you a pass to the small NEX shoppette down the street. They do a brown bag breakfast with a bagel, cream cheese, chewy granola bar and large bottle of OJ. My sons loved this! It was fresh and read to go! Was great for PIR day. They do not have shuttle service...I drove a rental which I really liked!
This one will ask form a "Sponsor". You should be able to give your new Sailors name and rate (E-1, E-2, E-3)...then I believe you bring them by to verify the info. I stayed with my dependant ID from hubby and that's what they asked for.
The Navy Lodge is not within the gates of base but off site in a housing area (still "the base" though) about 2.5 mile drive from it to Gate 8 on Ohio street...but it's a mile if you were to climb over everything in the way!
Naval Station Great Lakes is HUGE and spread out. Thje Main Commisary is a few miles from base...I was confused at first becasue I am so used to everything being on a Base after you pass the gate! LOL The buildings are all that dings are that brick color that I love and I was just itching to walk all over RTC!
There is a Navy Gateway Inn on the Main Great Lakes Base...that one you need ID for...I know of some wives who have stayed there.
Okie: I assume you mean the Navy Lodge? Lala or FTLW could answer this since both stayed there.
For guests staying at the Navy Inn, is it difficult to come and go on base? What about the kitchen facilities? Do they have what you would need to make a home cooked meal?
Sandy's back! YAH! Now...if we can just get Betsy back! :-)
I have been told that Ramada has its own shuttle service. JessicaBSailor stayed there and had mentioned that. I know that it is free to guests, whether it is their own shuttle or a taxi shuttle that the hotel pays for.
We like to recommend that you all fly into Milwaukee if possible. Less traffic, about a 45 minute drive to GL. JessicaBSailor & Betsy (N4Moms veterans on the site) both did this and said it was wonderful. Southwest flies into Milwaukee...no change fee and 2 bags ship free. So you may want to check out their fares. They also fly into Chicago-Midway, but as Arwen said, that airport is the furthest away (and more traffic to get through!). Just make sure that if you will have a sailor flying out the day after PIR and you plan an airport visit with your sailor, book out your own return flight from Milwaukee later in the day or better yet...the next day. You don't want to miss any time with your sailor having to run catch your own plane!
For great taxi service call Sarge – 1-847-212-0246. He charges by the car not the person and lots of moms have shared rides. He also hosts a very informative and fun Meet and Greet from what we here. Goes above and beyond the "call of duty" for the Sailors and their families. Haven't ever heard a bad word against him.
