Yeah TL3, we seem to be in the same boat here (no navy pun intended) maybe we will end up seeing each other at the airport.

So glad to hear that more letters are being received.  It is a fantastic feeling!  Only disappointment is that since she is a Nuke...she too will be leaving shortly after graduation.

On a positive note...she did get promoted to Starboard Watch Section Leader...whatever that means...lol  She says she's the head marcher for 1/2 the division - she gets to yell out calls & lead.

Oh and ladies...Write, Write, Write!!  She said thank you for writing that it was better than Christmas!!

Actually if your son or daughter has a college degree then they will go in at an E-3 or 0-3. Also, if they were in the Jr Rotc in HS or ROTC they also get some rank.

Yes, they can can be advanced.  If their RDC think they are doing an outstanding job, then they will have them promoted.  Usually it's for those in leadership roles, taking harder jobs, like being a RPOC, AROC, Master-at-Arms, Starboard or Portwatch section leaders.  Even if your in a leadership role, only a few get it.

If your recruit completed their DEP handbook and passed the test in boot camp, they can also be promoted too...

So, is an SR able to change rate/rank based on performance during boot camp?

Comment by Craig on May 25, 2011 at 7:07pm

esther - You are correct about the rate.  They are all E1's while they are in boot camp.

When you join the Navy, you can sign up (enlist) and can be E1 thru E6.  However, mostly (like 99%) enter as E1 thru E3's.   I had a depper on my website sign up as an E5,  he won't actually get promoted until he reaches his 1st permanent duty station (about 4 months after boot camp).

Deppers that are E1 or E2's can get advanced to next higher rate by having training in JRTOC, Sea Cadet, Civil Air Partrol, College, Scouting, Sea Scouts, Young Marines, Vocational School, Military Academy, or DEP referrals. That the easy way to get advancement.

In the Navy we have rank, but it is only for officers.  Enlisted sailors make "rate".   To civilians, rank and rate mean the same thing, but in the Navy the proper word is rate.

Craig, since you seem to have knowledge.  I heard that PIR is not on the BC base it's on the A school base because they have a larger area.  Can you find out exactly where it will be in relation to the normal venue?
