Oh my.....Kellie....that letter brought tears to my eyes. I wish I had written my son more often when he was there....I know he didn't get mail everyday, although others did write him. This was such a beautiful way to express how the recruits feel....
So write lots and lots, ladies! Ask those who are special to your SR to write too! Teachers, neighbors, pastors, etc....Maybe even give them stamped addressed envelopes with a blank sheet of paper to encourage them! I asked 2 special-to-my-son teachers to write to my son...he loved it. So don't be shy! You would be surprised how honored these people are to have been asked to write to your SRs!
I found this on the Navy for Mom's facebook page, I was doubting myself for writing too much and then I read this, I know what I am doing tonight. I can't even imagine:
What Mail Call looks like to a recruit....
One of the moms in another division rec'd a letter from her son and he was so upset he hadn't gotten much mail from home. Having been through boot camp myself, let me tell you what Mail Call looks like through the eyes of a recruit. Mail call happens every night after 1-1 day. It's usually right before lights out when your recruit is exhausted having been up since oh-dark-thirty and been screamed at and pushed to the limit all day. The one thing they have to take their minds away from the literal hell they are in is a letter from home.
So there they are, all lined up on the black line. There's two lines, half of the recruits on one side, half on the other, facing each other. It's the one time they listen intently, hoping to hear their name called. The mail PO stands at the head of the group and calls the names one at a time. Some names get called 9 or 10 times, others never get called. But every day the hope is the same.....I remember the girls who never got mail and they would wait with their head down so no one would see the tears roll down their faces. I was lucky, I got mail every day, but your SR's will tell you that some get none, and they really need it. when you talk to your recruit, get the names of those that need mail. And if you're reading this, then write your recruit EVERY DAY. It matters.
What did he say about boot camp so far, I am interested in hearing all the different accounts we can all share.
So happy for you Nina, can't wait to get the mail tomorrow now just incase :) Enjoy your letter.
Better late than never, that is for sure. We have new members join all the time some only find this site a few days before PIR. So glad all of you found it :-)
Think Letters will arrive like Wed or Thurs.... Maybe a call Fri or Sat. FINGERS CROSSED!!! How's everyone holding up so far? I'm pretty much addicted to N4M's site. I get updates on my phone constantly, and I'm always racing home to get online. I hope all of our SR's in the group are doing well, and staying healthy. Hearing lots of kids are sick in one way or another. Well off to dinner with friends (phone attatched to my side) so I'll be back on later to check in....
No letter here today either...
