While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by Suzbee on August 9, 2013 at 1:35am: My SR has completed 12 days today! No box yet but we did receive the form letter last Saturday so the letters are flowing >>>>one way for now. ; ) I have a system for now, until I hear from her, of placing a letter to share in her letter.

Veteran Moms- If I send letters to her with a small star on the corner in the future, for passing on to another SR, will it be understood by the RDC as a share symbol and NOT a decoration worthy of punishment? (lol the things we have to worry about!) The corner star seems to be the chosen share symbol from what I've read. Input appreciated! Thank you!

Comment by diannep on August 8, 2013 at 11:36pm: ...some of the higher-numbered divisions could still be in processing days. The lower-numbered divisions should have just started training week 1, as FTLW said. All should be in training week 1 by the beginning of next week.

There are 6 training weeks....they come after the processing days. At the end of the 6th training week, they do BattleStations and are sailors! Those in the lower-numbered divisions will complete this about a week before PIR; higher numbered divisions will complete this at the beginning of PIR week. So there are some days between BattleStations and PIR that give the sailors a little rest.

Comment by diannep on August 8, 2013 at 11:33pm: pbarb: The form letter can actually take up to 2 weeks or so to arrive. Some divisions fill before others and send their letters out sooner. If you don't receive it, is there someone else your SR could have sent it to? They usually only can sent one (I understand that in divorce situations, they can request to send a 2nd letter to the other parent).

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on August 8, 2013 at 7:56pm: Some of you MAY be blessed with an early call home as well. The norm is about three to four weeks after arrival at RTC.

Individual Recruits sometimes earn a call home as well. This is "blessed" onto them by their RDC for exceptional performance...I have seen one where a Recruit got to call home because he shined his shoes better than the RDC did! LOL

There is the possibility of you receiving a phone call from your SR (Seaman Recruit) during the first one to two weeks (sometimes later as well) after their arrival for Security Clearance info. I received mine one week after my son arrived at RTC. Had no idea it would come that fast. I'd only really been on the site for a week or two, so I had NOTHING ready! (My son asked for two more names along with their phone number and address. Sometimes you may be asked to fax the info but he was told to get it from me right then.).So... if your Recruit has a rating that requires security clearance information...800 Divisions, IT's, CTI's CTT's Nukes, AT's (the list goes on!), anyone that handles confidential info...have a list of references by the phone.

This is a short business call and is monitored. No time for chit chat...but once in a great while the person monitoring the call allows a few extra minutes.

The area code for GL is "847". My security clearance call, the caller ID said "US GOVERNMENT". We have also had "PAY PHONE" reported and then area codes for the surrounding areas...so answer all...and just get rid of those telemarketers!

Also, if you receive a call from your SR (at any time...not just the Security Call) and miss it...please do not call the number back. Your SR could get in trouble.

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on August 8, 2013 at 7:53pm: I am guessing that this TG is in the very early stages of Training Week 1 now...I know that recently we have seen a lucky division or two that get to write home on the very first Sunday that they are in their permanent compartment on RTC. Normally they do not write home until the second Sunday as there is sometimes just too much to do still on the first one.

Sundays have "Holiday time" (yup, that is what it is called!) from 7-1. This is "free time" where the recruits do not have any thing scheduled to do...BUT there is always "structure"...meaning what they are and are not allowed to do during this time. :-) In addition the recruit actually has to have the time to take advantage of Holiday time...they may have studying to do, ironing to catch up on etc. Those things need to be "squared away" before any leisure time. No napping though...but many report being able to take a longer shower.

Oh and the females DO NOT get to shave their legs until that second Sunday...there is just no time for it before then!

During the first half of BC Holiday time may be the only time your SR's are allowed to write home. They may be granted more time during the week during the second half of BC...usually based on performance and general status of the Division.

This is the basics of writing home.Notice I did not use any "definite" vocabulary LOL. Things change all of the time and performance is a big "thermometer" as far as privileges go.

We call it a PIR GROUP here on N4M'sas that is what you all are "working" towards. Getting support along the way and making your plans for PIR, learning about military/Navy life and mentality etc..."Mom" (Dad, sibling GF,BF etc!) Boot Camp.

The Real Structure RTC-wise is this:

SR (Recruit)

          v

          v

Divisions=A group of Recruits (88+ starting out) that make up one of many Divisions.

           v

           v

TG= Training Group - A group of Divisions that make up one TG that all have the same PIR date.

AND we can't forget our RDC's - Recruit Training Commanders! Each Division has three RDC's.
