lol - I'm carrying my phone around with me here at work today waiting on "the call". I was carrying an armful of boxes and it rang and I literally dropped everything to see who was calling. It wasn't the one..... doggone it. Still waiting.......Hopefully the calls will start soon!
congratulations everyone! I have to miss the meet and greet but am looking forward to staying connected with families from 819 (and everyone else as well). Travel safely, and congratulations, hoping my call comes in today!
We are heading for GL this afternoon. Can't wait to see my boy!!! I hope that I'll get the I'm a Sailor call this afternoon.
Congrats to the new sailors of 946, 313/314! HOOYAH!
For those of you with sailors staying in GL for school.
You will have about an hour after PIR with them before they have to go back to their ship at RTC and pack up to move over to the other side for school. This process can take several hours. Be prepared for them to call you to come get them anytime from about 2:30 to 5:00. Most of the time they seem to be ready to go between 3pm and 4pm.
If you can go to the visitor center to wait for that call. First, you will be there when they call you, but there is something great to listen to and watch as you wait there for them
All the new sailors march from their ship there at TSC to the gate in groups. You can hear their cadence from a long way as their ships are in almost the complete opposite corner from where you are waiting. The last street they are on before the march to the gate is running parallel to the fence behind the visitor center, they make a right turn and you can watch them march up the street to the gate.
When you get the phone call to come get them, the anticipation as to whether it is your sailors group, that you can now hear marching a long ways away to the gate for liberty, is almost as great as waiting for that door to open at PIR.
yes ranaeaw, you should be able to purchase items at the NEX on PIR day even if your Sailor has already left the building. Our Sailor was in the building but they never asked us for ID when we were buying stuff. And I know some others were still in there shopping after their Sailor had gone to move to the other base.
And sometimes even the NEX at different bases will have a "special" sale where you don't need military ID to shop there. They have limited items that you can purchase during these sales like you can buy souvenirs but not electronics or other big items. They usually have this kind of sale when something special is going on like an airshow or fleet week.
Does anyone know if the family is allowed to go to the NEX without the sailor after PIR? My daughter only has a few minutes with us and then she has to go check in at A School. I wondered if we would be able to go to the NEX for Navy items before we leave the base and head back to the hotel/sightseeing while waiting on her call for us to go get her. TIA
