For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

There is the Gurnee Mall with places to eat and a movie theatre. My daughter wanted to get her eyebrows done and we found a nice salon about 15 minutes away from the Waukegan Hotels called Octagon. I will post their address when I put up my PIR tips discussion soon. There is a place called Navy Pier. I haven't been, but heard that was nice, but I think you have to travel to it by train? The amusement park might be closed for the season. Look those up on your favorite search engine~~ Try something like "things to do near Great Lakes, IL."

I have heard not to "plan" too much and to let them kind of dictate what you do. I heard that a lot of them just want to shower and relax at the hotel at first. I have seen that some people go to the Navy Pier, but I am not sure where else, the amusement park is another one I have heard of but I don't think my son will want to do that???

Comment by Jackandmarie on August 22, 2013 at 3:48pm: Daughter arrived GL on 8/13. Form letter arrived today. Recruiter had given an incorrect zip plus 4 zip code. Had been given 60088-3415. Form letter indicated 6008-3515.
Does anyone know if letters sent out previously with the incorrect zip plus 4 will be delayed?

His youngest sister (age 7) keeps asking when she will get to talk to him! I hope he calls before school starts.

I am glad to hear a little bit about what is going on with their group (although my son is one of "the boys they are harder on" ha ha Can't wait to hear from him and see how he is doing.
