Jenn-- Messaged you! :) Glad Brandon feels better about where he's at with getting his to-do list accomplished.

Kendra-- That sucks for Meg. :( I hope she can figure everything out soon!

Comment by Jenn (Proud AO Mom) on December 1, 2011 at 8:38pm

Well I got to talk to my boy yesterday and today.  He was much better.  Yesterday he realized that just about everyone in his old division was in the same boat in regard to watch quals, the computer test and the oral board.  Most were done or almost done with the quals, it was the test and trying to schedule time between their indoc classes with the oral board that was giving them trouble.  I think he was happy to know that he wasn't the only one.  He was really happy when he called today - mainly because he got his cell phone.  It gives him more independence to get in touch with home and friends.  And he had finished his quals last night and his computer test as well and had passed it and was scheduled to meet with the oral board tonight.

AZK - I'm not exactly sure what watch quals are either.  I think Jo's description is pretty accurate.  I'm guessing it is stuff they have to know before they are able to stand watch.  When my son was describing it it sounded a lot like he was going around trying to get people to sign off on things.

Watson - was your son 007 or 008?  If you want to message me his number I can get it to my son and that way they can try and get in contact.  Is he on the main base or at Correy Station?

Jo - Message me Matt's # - I'll send it on to Brandon.  That way he can text him if he wants.  I'll think he'll be in touch with Aloha's son who is in Groton too so it would be nice for him to stay in touch with both.

Kendra - I'm so sorry that Meg is having a rough time of it.  I totally understand.  It's so hard to hear after they did so well at boot camp.  I hope that she gets everything figured out.  Brandon doesn't start school until after the holidays either.  I think he thought he'd get there, start and be done by the middle of January (his school is really short).  So he is adapting to the Navy's hurry up and wait.

Watch quals are, from my understanding, learning the ins and outs of the buildings and all that stuff. Idk, Matt explained it to me but I forget.

Thanks guys! For now I think we're just planning a courthouse wedding so that it can be on paper, and we'll have a "fun" wedding a little further down the line. We just don't have the time right now to have an actual wedding. I'm a little terrified, but I know in the long run I'll be fine :)

I hope the Sailors who are having a harder time adjusting get their "sea legs" soon! I know how it feels to be overwhelmed like that, it sucks. If any of the 007 kids want Matt's phone number, let me know--he'd love to hear from them!

I can soooo relate to this quote!

"“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”

My son is in Florida also, and is separated too from his friends. He seemed bored and a little lonely when I talked to him on the phone the first few days. I too got the impression that he is overwhelmed by how huge the base is. I think he felt like he was getting the run-around on some papers he had to fill out to be able to come home for Christmas.  But all that being said..... I have to think, and hope that the loneliness and feeling of being "all on your own out in the big world"  will help him grow and become stronger minded and more compassionate for others in the same situation.

And I am growing ...or I should say having some growing pains in letting him grow on his own! Momma here justs wants to rub his back and tell him all is well. :)    And I know that in the divine plan all is truly well.

I'm so sorry to hear of those kiddoes that are lonely and unhappy.  I hope their transition starts to get better soon!  Even though I alternate between pride and extreme anxiety about Thor's career path (SEAL), one of the benefits to them is that they are all still together and will continue to be as long as they continue their journey.  He has a new family and bunches of brothers :)

Question....What is "watch quals?"

Comment by Ship12 Div 008 Kendra on December 1, 2011 at 9:17am
Meg is not having a great time... She doesn't start class til January and she's separated from all her BC friends! She is going to CTN school and is alone and overwhelmed not sure of where to get forms filled out for Christmas. Mostly the being lonely part is the worst. There is hopes she will be home for Christmas as long as she figures out the paper work.

Thanks Diana, Jenn & Tiffani! I will have to get the barracks number. Diana, my son also arrived Friday.

Bummer Jenn!  C says that he is done with all his watch quals, his class is only 5 weeks long and he doesn't have the extra classes.  I'm thinking B and C are not in the same barracks because C said everyone is super helpful, even his Chief and Petty officer have been helpful

WOW JO!!!!!!!  How awesome!!!

Brandon says Florida is cold right now too - he says really cold, which seems weird to me.  He's working on his watch quals right now too but called last night and just seemed really upset.  He's trying to get these quals done and then found out that he has to take some kind of test on the computer and then go before a review board - all by Thursday or he could be in for EMI (Extra Military Instruction) which he is worried will affect his leave.  He's just feeling really overwhelmed and I felt really bad for him.  He said that everyone there seems to be looking out for themselves and that nobody will answer his questions in a helpful way.  It sounds like he is having a harder time adaping to the freedom than he did to boot camp.  And he knows that he can leave the base on the weekend for a while but he has to check in and out with a buddy and all the guys that he knows in his barracks are 21 and he thinks they will all want to go to a bar and he can't so he won't be able to go off base.  He misses being closer to a lot of the guys from 007 and is waiting on his cell phone to get there so he has some way to stay in touch and try and meet up with them.  I just felt bad for him.  I'm hoping the adjustment comes easier the longer he's there.  He likes the base and being able to do more stuff - I think he's just overwhelmed.

Aloha (Dee) - It was way fun to be your flying and riding buddy.  Don't be a stranger!!!  And tell your SN hi from me.  Once my kid gets his phone I'll get his number from you and pass it on to Brandon so they can try and stay in touch.
