Craig, my son's going into the Sub Electrical / Electronic program. I was a Auxiliaryman (non-nuke Machinist Mate).
Oh boy, this is going to be a great group. A former bubblehead, and a former target. Glad to have you aboard....
Is your son doing the same rating or is he doing something different?
I hear you brother. Service week was actually really fun for me. Their service week will turn to service months when they get to the fleet and have to do "mess cranking'. The Navy has changed a lot.
Craig, we Bubbleheads are Regular sailors, however I will agree that we may not be completely Normal :)
It was about 9 weeks with the P-days. Some of the biggest changes I've seen so far is the changing of "Divisions and Companies" to "Ships and Divisions", the change does make sense, its more in line with what the sailor will experience in the Fleet. Also the loss of Service Week takes out some of the fun, at least for the RCC.
My head is spinning too. But mine is because of the Blue Moon I'm drinking. ~ha
For the newbies, the group admins usually talk about different things like this just for the fun of learning. I know your main concern is with your sailors but we do like to make sure everyone learns the proper Navy terms and ways of life. So.....
Regular division would be the most proper, but let's face it, we're not Miss Manners here. The terms are both interchangeable.
Here is a Navy message that just was released two days ago. Look at the bolded area that describe the sailors. We have regular sailors and we have reserve sailors. They are all sailors, but we make a difference to tell the them apart.
It says:
"E. EXAMINATIONS FOR RECALLED RESERVISTS WILL BE ORDERED BY THE COMMAND HOLDING THE MEMBER'S SERVICE RECORD. AUTHORITY IS GRANTED TO ADMINISTER EXAMINATIONS TO SELRES CANDIDATES ON ACTIVE DUTY CONCURRENTLY WITH THEIR REGULAR NAVY COUNTERPARTS ON 17 JANUARY 2013 FOR E7, 7 MARCH 2013 FOR E6, 14 MARCH 2013 FOR E5 AND 21 MARCH 2013"
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/...
We use all different terms in the Navy to describe everyone just to make it easy for people to understand.
We call the submarine guys "bubbleheads" and they aren't normal/regular sailors.
We call the guys on the flight deck "Airdales" and they aren't normal/regular sailors.
We call the engineering guys "snipes", however they are regular Navy.
btw: for those that want to know why we call them snipes, go here: http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ship4div291pir922010/forum/topics/...
The Navy has sooo many weird rules... It's great when things like this come up so we can talk about them. So the bottomline is, both terms are correct....
FTLW, when I was leading Recruit Companies years ago in San Diego, we referred to non Drill Companies as Regular Companies. I think its OK to continue the term for Divisions.
