Okay, sounds good. I'm copying most articles into a word file, but Sunday I clipped the football and baseball scores. Not that he is a sports buff, but thought he could share it with the others. Thanks for the info.

Well some RDCs don't like newspaper clippings...just don't worry the worst thing is they will throw them away...scan them in and make them a regular part of your letter. Do that with pictures too, although pictures as long as they are appropriate and are wallet sized are acceptable according to many people. There are many reasons about clippings and such. They are learning to live in a very small space and have to keep it "neat as a pin" so clippings and things as you well know can get messy, they fall here and there...so lets be real careful.

Funny story, about two weeks ago I was in the chat room when i was having an insomnia episode and some significant others were talking about the letters they were sending their recruits in graphic detail. It was definitely TMI for this mom. Yikes, all I can say is I hope nobody else got ahold of those letters. I just remember the recruiter telling my son that NOTHING is sacred in boot camp. So, don't have your girlfriend send pictures or write anything you don't want everyone in your division to know.

Thanks Jessica. I know we are all learning and want our recruits to get through these weeks as easily as possible.

Uh oh, what's wrong with newspaper clippings?

@SailorMom-Denna My son is in Div 364... no letter here yet either but I'm *patiently* waiting. His girlfriend hasn't gotten one yet either.

@Lynne I knew not to send extra "stuff" with the letters (our recruiter told an awful story how his mom sent him a birthday card that had confetti in it - ouch!!). He said small pictures were fine though. I haven't sent pictures exactly but my daughter and I have sent printed sheets of things to send with the letters... printed on regular, nothing special. Do you think this is ok? Of course if it's not ok we won't send any more...

Have a great day everyone... I'm off to work (ugh!).

Hey all let me stop for a minute and remind you to stop and think carefully before you make calls or write emails. I am an overinvolved mother. I confess I am. however, I know, no matter how much I want to, I can not write, call, email or otherwise contact RTC or Great Lakes. OOOOh sometimes I want to. However this will not help your recruit. In fact, it cold embarrass them. There is nothing an RDC would enjoy more than saying "guess who's mommy called me or hubby called me or wife called me" Let's consider this rationally, we have to be careful about the color of the envelopes we send, that ther are no stickers on the envelopes, that no newspaper clippings are inside, that no care packages go, or musical cards. Can you imagine what an RDC would do with a personal call or email that either was sent to him or he heard about? Part of what they view their job to be is to change the reliance of the recruit from their family to their division. That means cutting off some contact. Why do some recruits seem to have more contact than others? One recruit seemed to do a great job stenciling, another folding. Some RDCs frankly are nicer than others and seem to allow and even encourage more contact with home. Some recruits will handle the stress differently. They will contact you. Let them do it in their time and in their way. They need you to be strong.

Whoo Hoo..I got my first "real" letter today. Sounds like Alex still has his positive attitude. He had just finished up with P3. He was tired, but still excited. I think that was last week, he didn't date the letter. I was just so happy to hear from him.

Good Evening! Just wanted to chime in about motels. My husband made reservations at Motel 6 in Waukegan. After the AARP discout it was $49/night. We stay at Motel 6 when we are travelling. Although, my husband said they were almost booked. Have not made airline reservations, but it looks like we will travel on Southwest, direct flight from Seattle. We are also going to rent a car. Good night all .....

Still no official letter, but I finally got an email from my son's recruiter who gave me his address and unofficial PIR date of Nov. 5. He's Ship 7, Div 364. I really thought his PIR would be 11/12 so I'm glad it's a week sooner. At least now I can mail all those letters I've been writing. Anyone else's loved one in Div 364? I don't think any of us have received letters yet.
