This is the final test for your recruits.  When they pass this, they are sailors and trade in their recruit cap for their sailor cap in a capping ceremony afterwards. The ship they do this on was designed by Disney, so it is very realistic. During…Continue

Hmmmm....I feel like I am missing out on all the fun of making reservations guys!!  I live to close to GL to fly or take a train or stay at a hotel. How about everyone stays at my house and we can have a party there??? We could all drive to the PIR on 2/11 from my house???????

frazcom, get your hotel and car reservations now, they are relatively easy to break (or change) if something happens and your recruit is delayed. This is going to be a large PIR, with 12 divisions, and there will be a lot of competition for good hotel rooms.

As for travel:

if you plan to travel by Amtrak, book now, it is easy to change reservations. Amtrak is more reliable in winter, last year the airport closed just before the Feb 12 PIR, a lot of families couldn't get there.

If you plan to fly, either wait until mid-January (a month before PIR) to make reservations. Almost 1/5 of recruits don't PIR with their original division, due to injury, illness or other reasons. Most drop out in the first half of training. Avoid the possible cost of changing reservations OR you can pay more for refunable tickets.  But if you wait too long the price of the tickets goes WAY up.

If you fly, try to fly into Milwaukee. It is the same distance from Great Lakes as the Chicago airports, and is ususally about $100 cheaper per ticket.

I made reservations there too, I'm willing to change them

I'm not sure who's trying to coordinate group rates at the Residence; Smeesmom would like to be included for a one-bedroom.

I know I am probably jumping the gun, but I gotta tell ya, making hotel reservations has been the first thing to get me out of my funk in days.... its like everything else is so out of my control ( the letter, the phone calls... oh - wait... I mean the LACK of letters and phone calls :-) , ha!, but this feels like something I can DO, and kinda makes it real for me that it's not THAT far off.   (Christmas without him is starting to get to me, I gotta shake this off and get in the spirit!) I am dying to make plane reservations before I even know if he's G&G or what......crazy.     My son would SO be making fun of me right now! That makes me smile - one of his favorite things to do (make fun of me)!
