This is the final test for your recruits.  When they pass this, they are sailors and trade in their recruit cap for their sailor cap in a capping ceremony afterwards. The ship they do this on was designed by Disney, so it is very realistic. During…Continue

Well I guess you can call my sailor girl a skeleton then. She is one of only a handful that has to stay and work during the stand down. She has watch on Christmas day :-(. She will not get to come home for Christmas. I wish there was something I could say to her to make this better. The last couple of months have been very hard.

You may also want to consider Amtrak. If you factor in the amount of time it takes to drive to an airport, go through security, baggage, etc, if you're within 1,000 miles of Chicago it can be just as fast to take the train. Plus on Amtrak you don't have to pay a huge fee to change your reservations, and it is far less likely to be cancelled in case of bad weather. It also costs about half as much, and most extra luggage is free.

Pretty much all of the A-schools shut down, and MEPS. Major Navy offices run on skeleton crews.  A large portion of ships pull into thier home ports for the holidays, and run on skeleton crews (just enough to go to sea in an emergency).

Basically RTC  is the only thing that continues on a mostly normal schedule and fully staffed during the holiday standdown.

I've seen 17-division PIRs, I believe the hall holds 18-20 divisions. All of bootcamp was designed with different times in mind. The place is partly empty at all times, they rotate barracks so that none of them get dusty and in fall into disrepair.

Sailors Girl,

Southwest Air goes to Milwaukee.  I hear that is much better than going to Chicago.  Fares are reasonable and I believe there is only one stop.

sailorsgirl - GO. If all else fails, they have a place for you to wait, you can see him right when they call liberty. Without a doubt I don't see that there would be any issues with you getting in. Definitely go. I got in, and multiple others did as well. I believe the facility holds 14 divisions, so each person x4, Give or take, some people don't have anyone that attends. But yeah, definitely go. Bring a state issued ID/Drivers lisence, go in with his parents, as a group, they will look up his name, state that you're an extra with his parents, and you'll get let in. Don't worry:) They understand that no one wants to miss it, it's an amazing experiance.

The website is updated with the new training groups  (PIR divisions) during the holiday standdown. New training groups are posted each Monday. Feb 11 divisions should be posted this coming Monday, Dec. 20, and those who will PIR on Feb 18 will be posted on Monday, Dec. 27 (even though they are already formed into divisions).

RTC basic functions continue through the holidays: mail, medical, food service, recordkeeping, uniforms, etc. It is only the in-processing (MEPS, most recruiting, and brand-new arrivals) functions that shut down.

Well dip me in chocolate and cover me in sprinkles!

Finally got the form letter. Like everyone has said, seeing my son's handwriting and reading the message made the wait worth it.

Officially Ship 002 Div 912 and PIR 2/11/11 Yipeeeeeeee

Yep, we took 4 extras and they go in with no problem and it was summer so people weren't staying away because of bad weather. So you should definitely go. And right now they can only write on Sundays but after week 4 most RDC's will give them extra time to write and at least 1 extra day to send letters. The 5th week I got letters on 3 different days. Of course it depends on your recruit. My sailor is a daughter who was very good about writing. One very weird thing is she got there the week before Memorial day and she got to write the first Sunday and Monday. She was the last one in her division so she was pushed and only ended up being there 7 weeks. I actually got a real letter a day before I got the form letter, so that was very cool.

Mamawalrus:  awesome - you heard from your sailor!  was it the form letter with the note on the bottom?  I know how you feel, just those few sentences in their own handwriting makes your day like nothing else.  Cant wait to get a "real" letter!!  so glad to hear the food's great, I'm pretty sure my son isn't sleeping much, so it's nice to know he's probably eating well anyway.   and now I know for sure they can only write on Sundays, well, I guess I better learn patience!!  Hoping for at least a quick call on Christmas.......only a week away......
