called metra this morning- the nice lady told me direct lines and times for our date.  she was real helpful and hopefully he can get through without having any trouble and save some $$!  I was told at the hotel that it can cost over $100 to take a taxi from o'hare to the base.  He did give me some local taxi phone numbers which he said would be $40 to $50 less than taking a direct taxi from the airport.

thanks, diannep.  am really looking forward to it!  Navygirl- we are checking out on sunday, but we will stay until he has to report to base sunday night.  we also have to take our air force guy back to o'hare sunday night.

I will be making my reservations soon. How long are you all staying for? I was thinking through Sunday, maybe Monday. but not real sure until I hear something from my daughter. I know her A school is in Great Lakes.

Also, bsmom:  Be sure to sign up for your PIR shuttle time when you check into the Residence.  We stayed there...loved it.  We were on the 6:30 shuttle and were seated in the bleachers by 7.  I highly recommend getting there EARLY!  Top bleacher row in our division section was already taken...but plenty of seating elsewhere.  Also, in your suite (we also had a 2 bedroom), there is a gas fireplace which came in very handy!  Free buffet breakfast each morning in the lobby!  Enjoy!

bsmom:  Not sure, but I know the GL station is right there next to the base.  I'm sure he will be able to get that info at Ohare.  They are used to the sailors and their families streaming in through there.

My Air Force son is flying into O'Hare for PIR.  I recommended he use the metra vs. paying over $100 for a taxi.  I got on the metra site last night to figure out his route and was totally confused!!  Thought I would call metra today to get the lines info.  Does anyone know the route to use to get to base?  I do understand he will have to go downtown and change lines...but no idea which ones he needs to use!

Hi ladies!  Booked my hotel last night for PIR!!  So excited!  My Air Force guy is flying in from CA also!  So excited I can barely stand it!!  We were able to get a suite at the Residence Inn Mariott at Gurnee for $139 a night...includes 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, living room with a pull out bed in a sofa, kitchen, and dining room.  With 5 of us coming to date, figured it was less expensive than a regular hotel room.  They offer a shuttle service and our Navy guys ride it free.   Now, the excitement begins...7 weeks and counting!!!

If you are used to using mass transportation (buses, trains, etc), and are comfortable with timetables, I strongly recommend using the train. I personally find using cars in a big city with a well-developed mass transportation system are more hassle than they're worth, and a huge liability.

We really enjoyed the face-time with our recruit on the trains. Instead of watching the road, we were able to fully engage in conversation, sitting across from each other in facing seats. Plus we were able to scrapbook our train tickets, LOL.
