Untamedfaith: I received my form letter, it just came Tuesday, the 28th. It confirmed his graduation date of 2/18. and also 4 lines of comment he was allowed to write. In that, he said it was the 20th. his first day was the 14th and he had not yet started PT. I received the letter 8 days after he wrote it. I don't know why such a ling delay. I'm just thankful its here.

Diannep, that is exactly what my sailor was told as well. Her whole division was told they were GradNGo. She got to call us to tell us she was GradNGo, she was crying so hard that I thought something bad had happened. She said I am GradNGo and if you can't come I understand. But there was no way when I heard her crying because she thought we wouldn't drive that far to see her for 1 day that I could not go. I told her to slow down and breath, Nothing was stopping me from coming to see her. Even if I only got her for 1 hour I still would have gone. But you are right, the RTC's use the term GradNGo for all those leaving on Friday or Saturday.

Yes, Arwen...that is exactly what I knew too...mine graduated in early Feb.  Thanks for your input about that!

As of one year ago (my son PIR'd on Feb. 19, 2010), they had three types of GnG.

GnG who stay in Great Lakes. These sailors go back to barracks after a 15 minute visit, then spend the next 5 hours moving to another part of base and checking into their school. When they are done they get a "normal" liberty weekend.

GnG who ship out to the airport immediately after PIR. Contrary to what the RTC website says, two full divisions from my son's PIR group did this less than a year ago. Many of the parents from those divisions didn't bother going for PIR and a 15 minute visit. Too much money and time spent for a very short event. This is why I suggest meeting them at their A-school for the longer visit. I valued my 3 days with my child far more than a 3 hour ceremony.

GnG Saturday-ship, a type of GnG who get Friday with their families, then go to the airport Saturday. As mentioned, you can meet most of these sailors at the airport for a visit and to give them their comptuers and other gear. I suggest purchasing a Navy camoflage backpack for these items, they will need the backpacks later, those are what they are allowed to carry while in uniform at A-school. They be purchased at the NEX on Friday, by you or your recruit. Some Saturday-ship sailors will be on charter flights. You will not be able to meet them at the airport, they are delivered by bus directly to their plane, and do not spend time in the airport.

How do you know if your recruit will be GnG, and which type? Wait, they will tell you. Sometimes they know by the fifth or sixth week, other times they are told a day or two before PIR, and you won't know until you get there. Usually the first two or three divisions are all GnG, but not always, and individual sailors in other divisions may be GnG. But the vast majority of recruits are not GnG, they have the usual PIR liberty weekend and remain at RTC for a few days the next week.

MustangMom (Ship03, Div 080) - thank you. My husband sent his box to his parents' house and i think his recruiter said that will be the address the form letter will be sent at. I got a 10 sec. call too that Tues 12/14 night when he made it to Ohare airport. Hopefull i will hear from him soon. I sent him stamps paper and envelops with my letter so now there's no excuse to not write me lol

untamedfaith (SHIP 3 DIV 080) - My son is also in the same division. I got

my 10 sec. call the Sat after he left. My ex-husband received the form letter 12/23, but I haven't seen it yet. I have not received any mail from him, but he did say he would call again in two weeks. That would be 1/1.

I asked the Navy Facebook page that question and this is what they said:

FYI: The term "Grad & Go" only refers to those recruits who graduate and depart RTC on the SAME day. They grad, and they go. The only recruits
who depart RTC on the same day as graduation are those who will stay in
Great Lakes for A School and check into their school across the street
on the main base. Recruits that are departing on Saturday are just
referred to as Saturday departures.

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command RTC did away with the process of shipping off recruits to out-of-state A Schools the same day as graduation about a year and half ago.

Arianna: I'm not sure what you meant in your post below?  Are you saying that they no longer send any sailors out on Friday (unless changing over to GL base), so GradNGos are now just Sat departures and GL GradNGos (Fri)?  This is getting very confusing.  But we use this term on this site so that families can plan their weekend.  If they have a GradNGo who is NOT going to GL, then they will have limited time with them because they are bussed to the airport/fly out on Sat. Others retained on RTC (not GradNGo) will have the full weekend with families, returning each night to the base.  They will either leave for their "A" School the next week or move to GL then.
