Thanks diannep!  I'll call back today.  I don't understand why they told me $179 but maybe they were quoting me a Residence Inn in Chicago instead of Waukegan.

For those who want to order your recruit's division tshirts (the recruits make the design that is on them), here is the info:

www.mwrgl.com

Click on "Enter", click on "Recruit Grads" and then scroll down.

Also, if you have AAA, they have a rate too (what we used).  I believe it was 10 percent off the regular rate.

MountainMama: I think you are talking about the Residence Inn info mamawalrus had on one of the other boards.  Unfortunately, she was misinformed by a front desk agent...when she called again, she found that there were no group rates (which is what she was trying for). The rate she was quoted for the 2-bedroom 2-bath you need is $134/night.  We stayed at this hotel back in Feb. Loved it.  I highly recommend it!  Free hot breakfast in the lobby too!  The gas fireplace is an added plus in the living room. And I believe that the sofa in there is a pullout for your 5th person.  PIR shuttle is available also.

cherrystreet:  There is a www.youtube.com video that gives you a glimpse of BattleStations. It is called "BattleStations 21" and it is put on by CNN. Take a look at it.  The ship it is on was designed by Disney, so you can imagine how realistic it is. My son told me that it is VERY realistic...with the sounds, etc...they are put through all events that they could encounter when on a ship...it is quite realistic.  They are not allowed to discuss details with us (confidential), but he did say it was quite an experience and realistic.  The adrenaline is going for sure! They have to stay up all night...falling asleep is a no no!  Immediately following this, they have the capping ceremony in the early morning where they trade their recruit caps for their sailor caps...and they are sailors!  The PIR ceremony is the formal ceremony celebrating your sailors. This will be ah AH-HAH moment for each of you...it is truly breathtaking...especially when the big door starts to rollup revealing your sailors!

Arwen:  Don't forget the Hall of Fame flag!  My son's division got that for their PIR group and it was a huge honor!

For those wanting to order the division tshirts Arwen mentioned, here is the website and phone info:

While at boot camp, divisions earn flags. Each flag indicates the division passed their exams and inspections, as a group, at a certain level.

The first flag they get is the guidon (guide-on), on their first official day of training (Day 1-1). It has their division number, and they use it as a visible reference point for marching.

Throughout boot camp they can earn other flags, and the biggie: the CNO flag. To earn the CNO flag, a division needs an overall average score of 4.5 out of 5 and must have earned at least one flag in each evaluated area (academics, drill, inspection and physical fitness).  Also, there are different levels of flags; blue, white and gold. I forget which one is best, but I do remember it wasn't logical.

They will also have a division flag, which is designed and painted by the recruits themselves. That flag is copied and printed on t-shirts, which you can buy at a table before PIR. Recruits can also order them ahead of time for a cheaper price. Ask your recruit if they will order one or more ahead of time, so you don't duplicate purchases! My son got shirts for the whole family, as gifts.

Here's what my son's PIR looked like:

Comment by Arwen on December 28, 2010 at 3:21am

I'm in Oregon, that kind of trip is just too much for me to do regularly. My son Chris PIR'd on Feb. 19, 2010, almost exactly a year before your bunch. Myy other son, Sean, is going through the enlistment process now (losing weight and getting fit), so we have no idea when our next trip to Chicago will be. It would be funny if he PIR'd exactly two years after his brother!

Comment by Renick ET on December 28, 2010 at 2:36am

OK, so GnG is clear as mud!  I get that it is doubtful as he's in a higher number. I will stay at the Ramada then for the PIR as it sounds like a good place. Do you go to the Graduations Arwen? I would love to invite you to my son's! Do you think you could make his graduation? it would be nice for you and we would buy you dinner! Thanks for info. Love it here. It feels like home for navy family! Thanks Arwen for shooting straight.
