More information to muddy the waters--this is another "official" Navy answer:

Common Access Cards (CAC's) are only issued by the DoD.  Also, I would tell the mothers to save their money (and keep the cart behind the horse) as most commands will issue a CAC reader if it is necessary for the sailor to utilize one.  It is great that they want to be proactive, however, the sailor should have access to a NMCI computer with a CAC reader at their first duty station.

As far as the computers/wi-fi cards, it is unlikely they would be used for work.

If the graduates will be Reservists and not going to the active duty fleet, my answer would vary only in the fact that a CAC reader IS necessary for home use.  The user would be given a reader upon reporting to their Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC).

Hope this helps!

My husband who is active duty Navy, highly suggests that all members have one for their own personal use.  Another name for the CAC reader is a Smart Card Reader.  We bought our daughter one.

Some commands will issue the CAC reader, but most times, the ones they issue have to stay at their working site.  You can buy one for your own personal use, which my husband highly recommends.

Some of you have asked about graduation gifts for your SR, as some of you might know, all military records now have gone digital and the military member can now access their records anytime and anywhere.  Well, anywhere if they have a CAC card reader.

A CAC card reader is a little device that plugs into their computer and they put their military ID card in and it reads the microchip that is in their card and they can access their records and so much more. Below is a link for them from Amazon one of the many places that sells them now days.

They are not very expensive I think somewhere around $20 and up, but don't let the price fool you the cheap one is just as good as the most expensive one. This is one of the items we bought for our daughter to have for her to use while in the military.

I guess, Mica, we have different information or the reader is different from the card, I'd guess.  Now I feel like I don't know what I'm writing about, so I'll quit.  I'm going to check with my Navy sources to get the right story.

I just called my husband because he has a CAC card and works at a government installation.  His words of advice--sailors have a lot to carry, so don't burden them with a lot more to carry, plus the lockers aren't big, and they will eventually have to travel.  He said the best thing might be to consider an iphone or android that gets the internet, but better to have your sailor pick out the plan and phone to begin with.  Still better to talk to your sailor when he/she graduates.

I know you're excited--I was the same way, but I learned fast that it's better to consult them because the Navy way is the only way in their lives now.

A CAC card is government issued, so you can't buy them in a store.
