When my son was in BC, I was the first one in our group to get the "I'm Here" call and the first one to get my "kid in the box" but I was the last one to get my form letter. There is no rhyme or reason to what happens, that's for sure.
I remember one mom who didn't get her "box" until 3 days before she left for PIR. She thought at first that her son had donated everything. But he said in a letter that he mailed it. It was delivered by Fed-Ex and left on her front porch behind a rocking chair. Turns out they always enter the house through the garage. She ended up finding it when she was in front of the house working ion her flower bed lol. It had been there about 6 weeks. It was crazy.
Yes, as navyknit said, do not lose that form letter. The password on it is what you will use to get your "gate passes" 10 days before PIR. So that password is very important. The gate pass allows you to drive on base for PIR. For those taking the PIR shuttles, you don't need it, but will want it anyway because you can use it to go on the base when you return your sailor from liberty on PIR Day.
So keep it safe!
If anyone has a recruit who will become an aviation ordnanceman and you would like some info on that let me know. That is what my daughter is and I have learned so much about that rate. She was amazed at what I knew about it when she got out of boot camp. She was coming to me with all her questions lol.
Still haven't received my letter yet :-(
I echo what FTLW said about scanning/copying piks you send to your SRs onto the back of your letters or even on a separate sheet of paper...collage-style. More for them to enjoy, less space to store them in!
According to the RTC site, you do not have to include "Recruit Training Command" in the address if you don't want to, but you MUST have the ship/division #'s. Those are very important!
CTI Beth'sMom: Really? People got upset with that term? How silly. "Kid in a box", "Child in a Box". Well, as you will find out, unless a family is "military" or has had experience with this process, they just don't get it. They TRY to understand, but they just can't understand. Many will compare your SR leaving to a child going off to college. Both hard times, but definitely not the same!
A child in college=cell phone/email/SKYPE connection....
a child in bootcamp=very little contact, it's random, contact is from child to you when given permission, not reversed.... THAT makes a huge difference and can cause an emotional rollercoaster for you ladies. But don't be hard on well-meaning friends. Most DO mean well...they just aren't able to understand. But we here on this site do! So vent, share, whatever you need to on here. We are here to help!
SR= Seaman Recruit
If you received your address from your Recruiter but have not received your Form Lettter with it yet....here is the generic correct format for addressing your recruit :
SR, Last Name, First Name, Middle initial
Ship ##, Divison ###
Recruit Training Command
#### Something Drive or Avenue
Great Lakes ILL 60088-####
Please don't send musical cards, put stickers all over the envelope, draw on it, nothing that draws undo attention...and definitely no glitter! You know how glitter can invade areas! You can clean so well and still be finding it weeks later! Just one piece shines like a beacon! They have regular inspections and it would be a "hit" (points lost) for sure.
Good Morning everyone, thanks for setting up this group.
