txbabydocmom: So glad that you got such a great letter! How did he get to talk to the girls? My son was asmoed when he was up there because a shipmate talked to a girl, got her number, and showed it to my son. My son didn't report him...not sure what happened to the guy (maybe discharged?) but my son was asmoed for a week because of that....no fraternizing with the opposite sex is strictly enforced--and shipmates are to turn in those who do.. I'm guessing that your son was in a position where this was allowed...I'm sure he enjoyed it!
NicksWifey: The NEX they use is the smaller one located on RTC, I believe. The large one you mentioned is at Buckley and Green Bay (off base). That is the one we recommend all use after PIR if you don't need to use the RTC one to pick up photos, etc. That one will be very crowded. More of a selection at the larger one and not quite as crowded.
Phone calls are made at/near the NEX. I know this because when my son was there, his phone card ran out in the middle of our call, he bought one right there, and called me right back.
Good morning all!
NicksWifey - They have their own NEX on RTC like LaLa said and it is small and the recruits are limited as she said. The phone room is actually down the Hall from the NEX store but in the same building.
Here is where it is at on RTC:
(The Parking Lot Graduation is incorrect on the map...I have a MAP of RTC Discussion correcting that that I will post soon)

If you have your Dependent Military ID already you could go to the NEX (Green Bay Rd) near the Commissary.
The place that Sarges friend Nick owns is Trattoria Pomligliano, and yes it is in Libertyville.
If you do decide to go, make a reservation and allow yourselves plenty of time to eat and enjoy. They have a great menu and offer half orders on a lot of the items, portions are huge, and the prices are very reasonable.
If you want Italian food (not pizza) I highly recommend eating there.
NicksWifey, when they are in boot camp they are only allowed on certain isles of the store at the nex. They aren't allowed on the isle for the souvenirs, the candy isle, in fact most of the store is off limits. That may be different after battle stations but I'm not sure. I know they can't buy anything like that though :-( That NEX is kind of small but there will be others that are very large and mall like. I know the one at VA Beach Oceana and Norfolk are both AWESOME.
Thank you diannep!
When the recruits go to make their phone calls, that is the NEX, right? I know there are at least 2 NEX's. The one that is next to the commissary, off of Buckley Rd and Green Bay Rd, is that the one the go to? I was going to write and tell my SR to take a peek at the baby clothes on his way to make the "I'm a Sailor" call, if it won't get him in trouble. He wanted our daughter to wear something Navy-y for his graduation and I wanted to see what he thought. Since the "I'm a Sailor" call will probably be the last communication we have before I go to GL, I was hoping he could tell me then and I could pick up the outfit at the NEX on Thursday. But, looking at the map, it doesn't look like that would be where they call from, as they would have to leave the base. Does anyone know? Sorry for the rambling.... : )
dbarton: I bumped up the flag discussion above so check out what FTLW posted.
Sounds like good news in letters today! Yah! And, yes....Hell Week is training week #4 and that is the turnaround week for them...where things "lighten up" a little and the RDCs don't yell so much! Things are much better then !
Sarge 847-212-0246 is the one who has lots of info on the place to eat for "FREE" for your sailor. I believe it is in Libertyville. His friend is the one who owns the restaurant. So if you go to his MeetNGreet, be sure to ask him---or you can call/text him anytime. He is happy to help!
