mh4kids - I received a letter from my son yesterday and it seems his division did the same as yours. So rest assured, his division is not the laughing stock of the base. My son's group still had several more people to take it as well, so we're hoping for the best. I didn't hear anything about following them to A school . . . but I think they will have other opportunities to earn an honor's flag.. They still have a ways to go, and even though they still complain about the slackers in their divisions, I have been noticing a slight change for the better each time I hear from him. I keep reinforcing the team effort and how everyone needs to work together as a team to make it. I guess it is hard when our kids work hard and others then can hold them back. But this happens to every division for as many years as there has been bootcamp and you would never know it come graduation day.

got a couple letters from my hubby yesterday....sooo good to hear from him, he dated his letters and he wrote them on wed, thur, and fri last week...so i'm guessing they can write whenever they have free time, but they only get mailed out on Mondays?? I wish he could send them whenever...anyways, he said that there were still a lot of knuckleheads there, and some of the 17yr olds are more mature acting then some of the 21 year olds...i really hope they get it together...he said that he passed his inspection and his first test, but a lot of other guys didn't so they had to do extra PT....he said some guys have to do IT, which is like exercising until you die...lol, he said he hates his boots and they are sooo uncomfortable, but they are getting better as a group marching...i'm interested to know what happened with that musical card his mother sent him...guess i'll hear about that in next week's letter! lol

I talked to my son's girlfriend yesterday. She says his call on Tuesday was pretty good despite what others heard from their sons. Maybe he was just playing it up for her, but he always did seem to be able to handle a lot of yelling at home because of his brother. I did get a letter yesterday. He says they do more IT then PT, which he would prefer the PT, of course. Yes, he too admitted to being a "sucky letter writter". But I don't mind. He is giving me just enough information to get by.

Got another letter today. He said he got all his wisdom teeth pulled, got to lay in bed and bleed all over.......Ok, so I noticed a lot of you mentioned that your sons had theirs pulled also, anyone know why this is? Is it something the Navy just does for every recruit? Other than that he does mention that it is getting better and as always ended the short letter with " I don't know what else to write" which is silly because every letter I send him I ask him a bunch a questions, but I suppose he never was much for writing.....there is just so much I want to know LOL....at least I can read what your husbands, boyfriends, sons, and daughters have to say. Thanks for sharing everyone!

Comment by Sobe,PIR 6/4 Corry Station/NASP on June 22, 2010 at 12:32am Oh my, I remember this part, when the letters start talking about the "slackers". There are some in every division, they just do the bare minimum and make life harder for everyone. It would break my heart (or make me mad) when I would get those letters. But here's the deal ladies, they need to be told (encouraged, whatever) to work WITH these guys to get them motivated to work as a team. And that's hard to do when your teed off at someone!

Teamwork is critical, they will not pass their final exercise if they don't work together. Somehow tell them that they need to help/mentor/motivate these guys, maybe even get in their face and yell (last resort) at these so called "slackers" to get the message across.

Each recruit is responsible for the recruits life who is sitting next to him. Plain and simple - and their RDC's are screaming at them to instill this in them, because they sink or swim together. They will be sailors soon, defending our country and they have to know who they can depend on - and that is that guy next to them - they must know what to do to, so it's up to everyone to help everyone. Wow - that was heavy, but it's so important. It can be a morale killer in divisions unless someone turns it around in a positive way (save the getting in your face idea as a last resort!). The person who is the slacker may not even know it, maybe they didn't grow up with parents who enstilled good worth ethics or maybe they never had to do chores. One kid we heard about was homeless, his parents gone and he was starving - so he joined the Navy. I bet he's very lonely and doesn't know how to react - he needs those other recruits to show him some compassion and encouragement.

Okay, getting off the soap box. It's only been 2 weeks since my son was in bc, so this is still close to home for me and still emotional too. Sorry!

Yes, We have been hearing the same although my sons last note that I got yesterday hinted of "things looking up"
Sobe posted some great advice earlier in this discussion about her sons expiriences, you may have to scroll back a bit. But I am certain that this scenerio repeats itself, div after div. It is all about learning to work together, encouraging eachother, or like she said they may just have to "get in someones face" . But they will figure it out. I cant say it like she did, but if you read her note it makes sense.....
Keep the ink flowing and encourage, encourage, encourage!

mh4kids...my husband isn't in that division but he said the same thing. He said that the people in his division don't take things seriously and can't work together either. I think he said his group also didn't get a high enough score and they didn't get their flag. He is very discouraged and miserable as well. He says that it's boring and they don't get enough PT. I'm right there with you, my heart goes out to them. I also just want to be able to talk to him and encourage him...I hope it gets better after bootcamp, I keep telling him it will. He is tired of all of the idiots in his group that continue to set the entire division back. It's frustrating for me, I just want to help him! We just need to keep encouraging them and sending them mail and cards :)

Ok I got a letter today and it was a bit of a downer. He reported that he passed his first test, but as a division they only got a 3.94 out of 5 and needed a 4.0 to flag (not sure what that is) He said that there were still 9- 10 guys that still have to take the test- so they might still get it. He said that he wishes that people would take things a little more serious...that they are the "laughing stock of the base". He said if they don't flag anything that that will follow them to A school and no one will want to work with them. He said he has been a little discouraged. :( on the positive side...at least he passed the test and is concerned about doing well and he did say he will just have to keep going harder. I know we were expecting calls yesterday- I wonder if they didn't earn them??? I really wish that I could talk to him and try to encourage him. I write him everyday, but if I reply to his letter tomorrow he will not get it until Mon. I can't help but think that they really aren't doing that bad and that they just want them to think they are horrible- that way when they start working well together they can start building them up... I hate hearing him sound so down. A big difference from last week. CALLING ALL MOMS and GF's and WIVES of Ship 4 Div. 817....encourage your recruits to hang in there and to work hard. :) Anyone else get letters saying similar things??? Sorry to be a downer. I am thinking it is a good thing that we do not know who these guys are that continue to goof off and talk because all of us would be hunting them down...lol!
