OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Kelly, that is a gorgeous picture that says it all! It is nice to cry with happiness instead of fear and worry. Thank you so very much for sharing your family with us.

I love the tender look on my son's face as he finally gets to hold her . . . and yes, she is adorable; of course, I'm completely biased. Thanks

Hello All, Haven't been here in a while. Just a lot going on. My son graduates from is combat school tomorrow in Gulfport. So very proud of him. Wish we could be there, but a very long drive!! Does anyone know if there is a website or something where they can see their orders? My son doesn't seem to know anything about anything until the very last minute. Is that normal? Fine either way, but would just like to know sooner if there's a way to check that. Helps in the trip planning!! Thanks to everyone for this great place to stay connected and supported!!

I was there for two weeks this summer. It is horribly humid, however, the people are warm and friendly, the food is amazing(Gulf SHRIMP), the trees are lovely, and the sea coast is beautiful. So it's not so bad. Yes, the commissary at the air base in Biloxi is nicer than the commissary at the Seabee base in Gulfport, but only because they had to rebuild theirs after Katrina while the Seabee one stood through the storm.

@ djloch (zac's mom). I went to Sicily out of my "A" school. It was public works and it was my best duty station i'd ever been to. The Seabees there were such a wonderful family. I was a single mom with a young daughter and she was included in this family. We worked hard and played hard. The work was plenty. The island is lovely and the people are really awesome if you let them get to know you.
@ Yvette, yes, Gulfport is humidity haven. I was never so glad to have ended a duty station and get out of there. I'm from RI so going to Ms was a complete culture shock! Did meet my husband there, retired out of there and went back to Sicily as a spousal unit!

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I find it so hard to get to talk to anyone about the seabees and I am so glad to have this group. I was starting to feel like I would not find anyone who has a seabee in the navy. My son just left Mississippi and is stationed in Washington state and we finally conviced him to stay in whih I am so glad considering I just became a grandma for the first time.
