Oh my goodness!! Well you have to be very careful when a bone has chipped.. im not exactly sure what the treatment is, but its very scary to know where that bone chip has ended up.. it must be in the blood somewhere. I wondered if they checked to see that.. see where the chip adhered to. that in itself will be soo painful for him! My bf is now on Ship 4.. how many different places do they have for the injured.. I wonder what the difference is.. that's my homework for tonight.

Iwoanavygf...I read on another group here... I believe it was for separating recruits. ship 17? There at the begginning of the post was a lot of info and links to some of these questions. One talked about a phone call the recruit has to make to get medical coverage going. It is for like 180 days post separation, but it is a transtional insurance. I will go look for it again. There was some very good resources and phone numbers on that page. As far as coming back and feeling like a failure...I do understand they are going to feel this. However....it just is not the truth. and that is what i will stress to my son if he ends up home to heal up. They told him he could re-enlist and try again in 6 months...but he and I both are suspicious of wheather MEPS is going to let someone in with any injuries. RCU is difficult. Jake told me that the RCU unit is supportive...it's the rest of the division and the drill seargeants or whatever they are called .LOL. I guess they are pretty disrespectful to some in there. He did say that he got a job finally working in an area where he is in charge of some supplies etc. He said, 'I finally got a chair to sit on and I have my own little room I hang out in all day mostly alone." I think it is a good thing for him. Thanks for the insight on the healing process. I agree with you. He did tell me on the phone when he first was sent to RCU after the fractures, that the right tibia was more severe than the left. He said a piece of bone had splintered off the bone. That sounds more serious than a stress fracture. Do you have any insight on this as a nurse?

I hope you have news soon about your bf. This is a very hard time for them and for those who love them. This is what being a family is all about though. Right?

Thanks Lynne!! I'll come back to visit! Julie.. my bf called yesterday and they told him there is an 80% chance of seperation also. He is not healing, his shoulder is worse than its ever been. The doc told him on last Thursday that they would have seperated him then but due to it being a civilian accident he wanted those records first before they officially begin papers. His appt is next Thursday hopefully we will know more. I'm so sorry your son is having to deal with other problems ontop of all of this! I'm a nurse, and my guess is that if there's no sign of healing after one month, then he is doing wayy too much and not being given the correct treatment.. there should be healing showing after a month. My bf said being on the new ship is horrible.. soo boring and it wears on you mentally. I am ready to support whatever happens to mine as well.. he is so scared of comming back and people calling him a failure, even tho this isn't his fault. Their health has to come first! I'm worried about who's going to pay for all the medical bills when they get seperated??

I got a call from my son yesterday finally. He was devastated by his girlfriends dear john letter, just like I figured. On top of that he told me his doctor took bone scans last week and said there is no sign of any healing yet. His stress fractures occurred 1 month ago. He told my son that at his next appt. on October 4th if there is still no sign of healing on the scans then he is going to separate him. I think this might be a bit premature. He is saying that Jake isn't healing. If the scans show the bone healing then they won't let him out. He is concerned about refracture. so am I. He is on phase III, and said he worked up to walking the track 6 or 8 laps, but was in so much pain and limping that he was finally given insoles and tennis shoes. Is the Navy really trying to help these young men and women heal? Or are they separating people to downsize the Navy. There appears to be a lot of separation going on. He is depressed and almost ready to give up. This is very difficult to understand at times. I am to the point that I will support him in any decision he wants to make, it is his body, health, and life.

Excuse me folks but I have a messae for IOWANAVYGF. You left us so quick and I know you are hurting and scared. I also want you to know we are all praying for you and your recruit. I believe in the power of collective prayer. My best friend Hope was given a death sentence in Feb - the doc said she would be lucky to see her son graduate in may..Today she is healthy and will take a form of chemo for the rest of her life which they think will be 5 to 10 years. I am telling you that because we believe it was the power of collective prayer that saved her life. We have people praying for you and your recruit all over the nation - that God will heal his shoulder. For those of you others in here, we will also pray that God will meet your needs. May each you be blessed and know that God is in your corner! Come back and visit Iowa...we miss you!

My son seemed to think THU was OK, although he was antsy to get moving on. They kept him busy: he stood watch (at doors that no one ever came up to!) and he helped with the brand-new recruits. He got to tell them where to go, where to sit, got to yell at them for talking, etc. He took computer courses when he had the down time, and was surprised that a lot of others in THU didn't take advantage of that. He enjoyed liberty on the weekends and then when he phased up, he had to go buy some civvies to wear off base. He had liberty most of the weekend after he finished up boot camp, so we visited him then, and his aunt, who lives in Wisconsin, visited him the following weekend. I could hear his better mood in his voice even when we talked on the phone (we brought it when we visited).

So even though they're waiting for orders when they're in THU, and they're not too happy to still be on hold, they are treated like sailors, not recruits, and it definitely improves their mood!

I also think the sailors who have been through RCU are stronger! I am happy for your son! My son said today he thinks he may have to stay at THU until a spot opens up in Pensacola. What was THU like for your son?

Mrssauce, I could almost have written your post. My son too was in boot camp 100 days before he finished up on his own--he just had different health problems. Stupid appendix, as he put it. He then spent a month in THU, and just arrived in Goose Creek yesterday for A school. I truly believe sailors who have been through RCU come out stronger and appreciate becoming a sailor all the more.
