By the way Cheryl - you're son will enjoy being an ELT on boats. The ELT stuff adds a lot of variety, and the chemistry control is interesting and a lot of fun. They don't miss out on mechanical plant ops either, which is a good thing.

Hi Cheryl, Congrats to your son for making 2nd class in prototype and getting picked up for ELT. He is clearly what they call a "hot-runner". Yeah, San Diego is quite a bit tougher to get now with only four boats homeported down there. There were probably four times that in the 80's. Hard to believe that the base actually seemed slower paced and more of a small town feel then. The shipyard is much more of a presence down there now, and has changed the atmosphere quite a bit. In spite of that though, it still is a great place to be. SECF is 'Submarine Electronics and Computer Fields'. Basically all of the forward (i.e. "coner") ET rates working on sonar, fire control, and navigation. The other fwd ET rate is ET-Comm, what used to be Radioman. They're involved a lot more in what the boat is doing tactically; so especially on a fast attack, they're pretty fun jobs underway.

Wendy, you must be one heckuva mom. I think anyone would feel the same, it's a painful thing - you will have a wonderful time with your kids, who will really appreciate you. Hope all you ladies have a wonderful Christmas, and for those of you whose loved one is at sea will have a wonderful homecoming when they return. I was there on the other end as a husband, and they were three of the most intensely joyous moments of my life, matched only by Zach and Sean's arrivals.
