For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

If it is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". Comment by Arwen on January 5, 2012 at 1:03am: One of the first things newly graduated recruits want is a real shower and a haircut before they go out in public. The Navy provides haircuts, but they're usually pretty bad.My son's haircut was lopsided, and some of the girls cuts... *shudder*

Many of the girls will want a full spa day - haircut, skin, nails... bootcamp is pretty rough on beauty care. They will know what they are allowed (a simple mani/pedi) and what they are not (nail polish).

Comment by Arwen on January 5, 2012 at 1:00am: There is pretty much nothing within walking distance of RTC, unless you want to spend your time on the A-school base and hang out at the NEX. If you want to make two trips, there is a mall about 10 minutes away. There is a theater, a Rainforest Cafe (really fun place to eat) and a lot of places where newly graduated sailors like to go.

Your recruits will be told what time they have to be back. The standard time is 8 p.m. but they can earn (and lose) extra time up until midnight. Each division in a PIR group may have different curfews on Friday and Saturday.

My son had an 11 p.m. curfew Friday and a 10 p.m. curfew Saturday, because one of the recruits screwed up and got back to barracks about 30 seconds late. It's about a 15 minute walk from the gate to barracks, so get them back a half hour early!

Sunday night was always 7 p.m. Usually the final night they don't allow recruits to earn extra hours because they're back to training the next morning.

There is a train station a very short walk (a block or so) from RTC. From there you can go to downtown Chicago. It costs $7 for a weekend pass.

There is a taxi stand on base (it used to be at the Illinois entrance, it may still be there) where there are always a few taxis waiting tot take PIR families elsewhere. It is at the same location as the "shuttle" drop-off. Many of them are the same taxis that perform as shuttles on PIR morning. Sometimes there are also limos, who will compete for your business for the same price as the taxis.
