Good morning everyone and Happy Thursday. Yes the payphone uses 35 min on the calling card just to make a call. So if they call home and you don't answer then they call your cell and talk for 5 minutes it will use up 75 minutes on the most cards. So lots of minutes on those cards. Also, many cell companies do not allow collect calls. I have Sprint and it does. My Sailor used up all the minutes on her calling card and called me collect. It was $10.00 for a 7 min call but I was so happy to hear her voice I would have paid $100 lol, shhhh don't tell Sprint lol
For anyone on here who did not send a phone card with their SR, you can buy one and mail it in your next letter. Remember to activate it (saves them time) and also remember that using the pay phone "eats up" those minutes, so get one with at least 400 or more minutes on it. They can also buy these at the NEX up there.
Welcome, tomsmomla!
Gc0972: You may want to find a picture to replace the group "silhouette" picture at the top of the page. Your choice! You can just google "Navy pictures", find one you like, save it, and download it.
tomsmomla: Funny about the phone card being sent home...things like that happen alot! They are being yelled at so much that night, that some of them just throw everything in that box! HA! They are allowed to keep their wallets, so in the DEP groups, we try to tell the SRs to have the phone card in there, along with a small paper listing phone numbers/addresses of their friends/family. In the age of cell phones, how many of us really know all of our friends/family's cell phone numbers???? :-) If you think that your SRs may need this info and you happen to have it, feel free to copy the numbers on a small sheet of paper and mail it to them.
Hi there...My son as you can see by my name is in ship 9, Div 172. He is a nuke. He also sent his phone card home. I'm just going to send it back. :)
Mj'sMom: That is very common....that the recruiter gives a different mailing address. They get it from the computer, and things change. That is why we always suggest that when the form letter comes, everyone check that address with the one the recruiter gave. Form letter address is always the correct one. But like Lala said, they make great effort to get the letters to the SRs so it will eventually get there. However, mail is held until they have their Recruit Mail Petty Officer trained, for about 2 weeks. Their first mail delivery is on a Sunday, then each week day after that.l
Another N4Moms veteran here joining to help out! Thanks for starting the group, Gc0972!
Hello!
FireTeamLeaderWife here!
My Sailor PIR’d on 05/26/2011. He is a Seabee Reservist. I have been an AF Reservist wife for 27 + years…I know …not Navy…but I am familiar with military life! We have been through two Deployments…one right after 9/11 and most recently a year ago…our son enlisted while Hubby was in Iraq. This site was a Godsend and helped me get through not only our sons BC experience but my husbands and my separation for 6 months.
I am a “veteran” mom on the PIR groups mostly. I have been on them now for the last 10 months and we have 5-7 PIR groups running at the same time.
I will check in here to see if I can answer any questions and lend support. There will be a few other veteran moms along to lend a hand and support you all through your PIR experience. Others drop in occasionally too…plus we are always looking for more to “join the ranks”. Things change in the military and we like to give out the most current info that we can so moms that have just gone through this help a lot.
I have a lot of Discussions with information to provide you along the way. I will post as the subjects come up! Please ask any and all questions…there are NO dumb ones Folks!
Welcome! Hang on for the ride!
she should still get them, they may be delayed but they should find their way to her before too long ;-)
