Veteran moms...just a question.  Do they get checks while at boot camp?  I was just checking on my SRs account and haven't seen anything go in  yet.  I know the first few are small, but was just wondering when the first one comes in. I read somewhere where they get paid on the 15 and 1st.  My SR was at BC on Aug 15th.  I hope this isn't a stupid question.  I am just supposed to be keeping an eye on his stuff for him.

Welcome back, Jessica. And....don't you disappear like that again!  HA!  Ladies, Jessica and I started in the same PIR group back in late 2009.  She is a wealth of info and a great addition to the team of N4Moms on here to help you.  Glad you are here, Jessica!

oops  clarify:  we had 20 mins with him after PIR.  He went back to his RTC ship for chow and gather his stuff.  They bussed at 1pm.  From 1pm to 3pm he had orientation... finally got him back about 3:30pm.

Hello Ladies!!  We just got back from our son's PIR on 09/09.  It was wonderful!!!  Thought I would share a couple things.. dont know if these are repeats or not... but here they go.

Our son stayed in GL for his A school, so we had all weekend liberty with him (YAY).  When we were there in April for my daughters PIR, she went to Pensacola, FL... so we only had a few hours with her after PIR on Friday, and met her at Ohare early the next morning, and got to spend a few hours with her at the airport. We had to wait to give her her cell phone until she was at the airport - away from RTC.

For those with sailors staying in GL, dont throw away your parking pass after PIR!!! you will need it to access the main base.  We only spent about 20 minutes with him after PIR... then they bussed him from RTC over to the main base about 1pm, and we went to the Visitor's Center (just off the main gate  entrance).  They march all the new sailors down the road toward the VC, and you can hear them for blocks away!! :-)  we then had to drive him from the vistors center, thru the main gate, showing our gate pass and everyones photo IDs.  I had to go into his barracks to sign him out for liberty.  But we had him until 22:00 each night (YAY!!)... but each day was the same... met him at the visitor center (because we cant access the base without military ID)... then drive to his barracks and sign him out... and sign him back in before 22:00.

On the drive from the motel to RTC for PIR... we took the same short-cut as we did in April.  Instead of taking Buckley and waiting in the long line of cars... we drove down Martin Luther King... then took a right, right before the last railroad track... before Sheridan St (you can see the alternate base gate straight ahead).  That right puts you directly in line to by pass everyone backed up and turning right off buckley.  Get into the left lane that goes straight.. and you get the green light and zip right across the intersection... then immediately turn right into the RTC gate :-)  ... anyone bringing their GPS should check out the MLK drive.  There are RR crossings... but we never encountered trains.

When going to the main gate... you can zip down MLK to the end, and turn right onto Sheridan... go over overpass, and main gate / visitors center is on left.
