On them being late back to base after liberty....my son said they are told:  If you return to base on time, you are LATE!  So....my son insisted on being back there 45 minutes early...remember, it takes them a while to walk back to their ships.

Wow, Sandy.  What a wonderful story!  You may want to post that on all of the groups, if you haven't already.

Funny on the "fear of God' comment...my sailor too!  He panicked when riding in the car with his "cover" (hat) on...briefly forgot if it is to be on or off!  Begged me to watch for others in the cars, as he was, to see.  They are filled with so many rules and regulations (and consequences for disobeying)...that they really have a hard time at first.  You can understand why in the hotel room, they can totally relax!  Many don't want to leave the room until time to return to RTC!  :-)

A Chief who frequents this site said that one time she was out eating at The Olive Garden. She was in her Civies. (civilian clothes). She said that the table adjacent to her was a new Sailor just out of boot with his family and friends.. One of the men at the new Sailor's table was trying to get the Sailor to drink some wine. He kept saying to the Sailor "come on, just take a drink. You deserve it."  The Sailor was very respectful and said No.  The Chief walked up to their table, showed her ID, and said to the Sailor. " I am very proud of you for not taking that drink."

You would be surprised at how easy it is to spot a brand new Sailor. For one thing. They are very shell shocked from boot camp. My poor son checked his uniform every second for loose threads. by the end of the week end. I found myself doing the same. It is just crazy.

Fireteamleader, every time we ran into a Petty Officer I thought my son was going to have a stroke. They put the fear of God into those poor Sailors.

I bet they really can spot them from a mile away and I bet the new Sailors can spot a chief, even out of uniform, from a mile away too. :-)

Your SR's will be given a list of do's and don''t's when they graduate.  Make sure that they follow them.  Like FTLW and Sandy said, no drinking, no cell phones back on base, no civvies in public and they are also not allowed to drive a car either.
Comment by Anne Darlene on September 13, 2011 at 1:53am
Oh my gosh, ladies!! We are so fortunate to have you, who have already been through this' on here! I read what fireteam had to say and was just about to post the question Sandy's sailor son answered about cell phones. You are amazing and so generous and patient in all your responses. Really can't tell you how much it means!! Been really missing my SR today and had to stop and remind myself that I never would have made it to the almost halfway point without getting on here and reading how everyone is dealing with the same 'missing'. Love to all!

Amen to what FireteamLeader, says about not being late back to base. Even a minute late is late. They are very very strict.  Also, do not let your recruits return to boot camp with their Cell Phones. Some other big no nos include wearing Civi clothes and drinking during that week end. There are lots of Chiefs who live out in the Great Lakes area. They go to restaurants too and can spot a New Sailor from a mile away.

Michelervc (and the whole group)- Here is a link to a post I did on "After PIR Liberty/Friday and Saturday Departures":

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir-10-14-2011/page/after-pir-libe...

It is available in the "Pages" section to the right of the weather and BootCamp Information video. Just click view all to see all of the posts there.

For those attending "A" school at Naval Station Great Lakes, you could have about an hour directly after PIR to spend with them. Then they will "depart" (Hence the "Friday Departure") RTC and move themselves and their belongings over to NSGL. This will take about 3-5 hours. Make sure that they have a working calling card so that they can call you when they are done and ready to be picked up to spend the rest of PIR day with you until they have to report back at night.

They will then have the rest of the weekend with you!

There are no overnight stays off base permitted and your recruit will let you know when they have to return to base each night. DO NOT return them late. They will really stress this too and most likely want to return early as being late will result in punishment...usually losing liberty...some or all of it. Liberty can be lost for ANY reason BTW. Graduated from BC but very much ...in the Navy!
