Patti, are you asking about a graduation gift for Boot Camp, or for A school?
Also, if you are not part of a group, I highly recommend that you connect with one on this site. More people will see your questions when you are part of a group. I will encourage some from the Beyond BC - Navy For Moms (ning.com) group to offer any suggestions that they have.
If you are asking about BC, I was able to attend Sarge's Meet n Greet, and bought some gifts there. A Navy blanket, and a flag. Also, I bought some challenge coins they had available. Some people buy the expensive G-shock watch, I think it is. But my son was happy with just his simple waterproof, black watch.
Some people wait until they are at their A school, to send items to them. Some also just put money in their account, so they can buy things at the NEX. The sailors are not charged tax if they purchase at the NEX.
Hi Chipmunk-
I was asking about a gift for graduation after BC. He has 9 more weeks to go before A-School.
I hope my messages are going through to the chat room. I am VERY untechnical! Let me know because I am quite baffled as to getting around this page :(
Thanks,
Patti
patti - here's a link to a post on here about gift ideas:
Hi there, usually on every base they have fast food restaurants on them. GL had mcdonalds chinese food there is a way to find out if you google it so a gift card would be good. we got out son a tablet a new phone, we also took him out to get new tennis shoes. that is a must because there old ones can hurt their feet. PJ pants t shirts undergarment socks. some get watches and only certain colors. we also got him a blanket . but things have change so much I really dont know what they let them have at A school nowadays. Thats all I can think of this was 5 yrs ago. my son is out now but still fresh in the mind.
Hi, Patti! My son graduated 11 months ago. We gave him a few small gifts (like an anchor and some challenge coins), but there were two things that he really liked. The first was this Navy blanket: https://www.lakeside.com/product/jumbo-60-x-80-plush-military-throw... (He has it on his bed at A school.) The other thing that he loved was a pre-paid phone. (He graduated the day before Thanksgiving and didn't get his phone back until he headed for the airport 6 days later. For Sailors who go to A school quickly, this isn't a good fit.) We knew that we would be with him from Wednesday to Sunday, and we knew that he would want to be in contact with his friends (and wouldn't want to use my phone for that). So I texted one person in each friend group and gave them his pre-paid number and asked them to share it with Joseph's friends. He wasn't allowed to take the phone back on base, but he was so happy to be able to be in touch with his friends.
Several people suggested getting a watch, but I knew my son might have strong opinions about what kind of watch so we waited and planned to give him one for Christmas. But he wants a submariner watch and decided that he doesn't want to get it until he is actually a submariner.
Hope this helps some.
MomofJoseph - the prepaid phone is a great idea!
We got our son a challenge coin with his rate and had the date engraved on it. They need to be able to travel light to A school so we waited and sent a care package to San Antonio, including shipping his laptop. He wanted to purchase his own running shoes and he was happy with the bedding they provided. During A school they couldn't leave base because of COVID restrictions, but there were lots of food places and bowling on base he took advantage of. Once he got to his first duty station found names of local eateries and entertainment, things like theatres and rock climbing walls and got him certificates for them as gifts. They generally don't have lots of room for "stuff". When I was looking for ideas someone on here recommended an engraved space pen. I thought that was a cool idea.
