More than likely he will be able to get cell phone 2 - 3 weeks after PIR. They have to earn the privilege of cell phone, civilian clothes, etc. You are so lucky to be able to have him the Monday holiday. Normally they have to be back on base late Sunday afternoon. My son moved the week after PIR to temporary ship (barracks), then several days after he moved to his permanent ship and has been there since the Sept. 09. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
I think it is different for every sailor. My son's PIR was 8/6/2010. He moved to (A) School early morning on the 11th. He called me later that day asking us to mail him his cell phone.

I know one thing for sure: Sailors can't bring cell phones back to boot camp with them.
After PIR my son had liberty until 7pm. We brought him his cell phone to use during Liberty with us: However, he told us that he could not take the cell phone back to boot camp with him. He said that if he did, he would be in serious, serious trouble.

NavyGirlfriend, I think cell phone privileges depend on several things. 1) who the chief is 2) New sailor's behavior. A new sailor has to prove how responsible he/she is.

Another word of caution. Make sure that you bring your sailor back to base early after his Liberty is over. My son's Liberty was from 8am to 7pm. We made sure he was back on base for 6:15. My son told us that if he was late he would lose liberty for the rest of the weekend. It could also result in the "Captains Mast."

PIR is more wonderful than you can imagine. I wish you and your sailor the best.

Sandy
Yeah he comes from a navy family his grandparents mother father were in it and older brother is in it now stationed in San Diego ca. So I'm pretty used to some of the rules and details and all that but a couple things I'm still not 100% about so I guess I'll just have to wait to see when he moves in to the other base and such. Thanks for the help!!
My son calls and texts us when he has free time. They do have more freedom in (A) School. It is not like when they are in boot camp where they can only call you 3 times.
Yeah I just wasn't sure when he was actually moving into the other base
He said he could have it as soon as he moved into the A school base. I guess we just have to find out when that is. He has A school there at great lakes. He has known for a while that he has liberty until Monday evening.
Yes they can have cell phones at A school. You can only use them in certain places and at certain times. Somebody in my sons class brought his cell phone to class and it went off. His phone was confiscated and destroyed in front of the class. You have to be very careful and follow the rules.

Wow liberty until Monday isn't he lucky. I always thought they had to be back by Sunday evening.
Wow, thank you letting us know about the sailor who brought his cell phone to class. I am sure my son already knows but I will tell him anyway.
Yeah smashed with a hammer and in about 20 pieces.
Just texted my son about this story. He said that not only will you lose your phone, but your rate as well.

My son said that he won't be bringing his to class.
My son just told me that you could get the Captain's Mast too.
Yes big time trouble. My son said the same thing.
